If Throat Cancer is caused by Oral Sex, isn't that God's way of saying it's wrong?

There are lots of examples of God’s indicating to us that certain acts are wrong like HIV.

I know people say heterosexuals get it too, but it started with densely gay places then it spread to women by bi-sexual men. It was originally down to the gay promiscuity culture, that was God’s way of saying it’s wrong. It’s spread to heterosexuals who are not selective about who they mate with.

Can you think of any other indicators that God reveals to us about what’s wrong and right in the world?

Oh, and random kissing of people has resulted in 90% of adult population with oral herpes HSV-1.Oral herpes or cold sores.

I am not going to get into the debate of whether oral stimulation within the context of the marital act within a marriage is right or wrong… So count me out of that part of the conversation.

But what I do find interesting is the logic that, because something can cause illness, it would be an indicator of being morally wrong.

Smoking causes lung cancer, but the Church has not deemed it morally wrong. Sunshine can cause skin cancer, but it is not morally wrong. Carcinogens on a burnt hot dog can cause cancer, but burning a hotdog and eating the blackened bits is not, as you would imagine, morally wrong.

I think that more reliable indicators God gives to us of what is right and wrong in the world are the natural moral laws embedded in the hearts of all men and women, personally.

I hope nobody considering coming (back) into the church ever stumbles across your ignorance and misinformation.

Regular vaginal sex gives me bladder infections. Ergo…?

Oral sex does not cause cancer. Some STDs can cause cancer.

I must agree that the OP has a rather naïve impression. I was never into using health arguments to get people to follow God’s ways. God is not a punishing God. He is a loving God and just being able to go to heaven should be enough motivation to do our best

No.

“…At no point in your rambling, incoherent [post] were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought… I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”

HPV causes throat cancer, not oral sex. I am not defending it or condemning it just clearing that up.

Jesus turned water into wine. Alcohol causes cirrhosis. If consuming alcohol is evil/wrong because it causes illness, then is Jesus complicit in sin?

First, you say “… certain acts are wrong like HIV.” HIV is not an act, it is a virus. In your second paragraph, you claim the presence of HIV is the result of the promiscuity of gay culture. Well, here is a news flash, there is a great deal of promiscuity between heterosexuals. In fact, HIV, they believe originated with the heterosexual community of Africa and then the gay community in the USA and then the general population. HIV is a virus that does not discriminate. Currently, one of the high risk groups for the spread of HIV is heterosexual senior citizens and heterosexual teenagers.

Finally, you are right in saying people should only have sex with the person to whom they are married,

Oral sex is not against Catholic teaching - it is only required that the sperm be deposited in the right place so as not to diminish the duty to procreate. For Catholics, married couples they are free to do anything in bed with their spouse, if agreed upon by both persons, as long as the ejaculation takes place in the vagina so this can be procreative.

Your post seems to want to attack a homosexuals as scapegoats. The truth is that our modern western culture does not encourage waiting until you are married.

👍

I think it’s problematic when we use such things as this to bolster our arguments about moral issues because it gives the impression that Catholic moral teaching rests on such things when it really doesn’t. Then it needlessly opens us up to criticism when 6 months down the road some other scientist publishes some other study that calls this one into question.

And, of course, then it opens us up to other criticisms such as, “Does this mean that the existence of wheat allergies is God’s way of telling us that we shouldn’t receive the Eucharist?”

Shame on al three of you.
Go back and read the Catholic.Com article by Jim Blackburn “In All Things, Charity
and the Forum Rules about remaining Charitable.

You don’t have to make personal attacks on a questioner just because you have a greater understanding of the “correct” position on a topic than they do - espcially when it’s an area like this where there are many “Christians” who loudly preach these ideas.

To the O.P.
Catholic Morality is derived from Natural Law, and the morality of an act can be indicted by it’s likelihood to cause harm… However the same virus which causes Oral Cancer, as indicated by this research, is the same virus that causes Cervical Cancer due to heterosexual, vaginal sex. No-one is saying that vaginal sex inside Marriage is a sin!

All these cases are based on , sexual Ethics, which is an area where our Morality derives from a mixture of Divine Revelation, and Natural Law.

We are all called to the Virtue of Chastity, and either to Fidelity in Marriage or to Celibacy.

Biology and psychology show us some of the grave consequences for violating the virtue of Chastity. But these consequences are the Temporal effcts of Sin, and part of why these acts are sinful, they are **not **a “Punishment” for that sin, by a vengeful god.
Also: HIV is not a “Gay Disease”… Yes in the western world it was first identified and spread among promiscuous communities, and the “Gay” community is the easiest to identify and most discrete promiscuous community…
But the most likely source in Humans of this virus is due to Bestiality occurring in parts of Africa, where a very similar virus exists in some other primate species. - I’m not suggesting that all Africans are responsible, or even that bestiality is common in those areas… but sin and perversions are universally present anywhere that Humans exist - that’s a consequence of our Fallen Nature.

You must be talking about the kind of random kissing that children do, because most of my brothers were getting cold sores long before they knew what a girl was. I think we have moral laws that are very clear without getting into proving it with health statistics. If the scientists could ever make extramarital and premarital sex “safe”, after all, it would still infect the soul.

HPV is spread in the heterosexual population, too. According to the CDC: …Anyone who is having (or has ever had) sex can get HPV. HPV is so common that nearly all sexually-active men and women get it at some point in their lives. This is true even for people who only have sex with one person in their lifetime…

*How common are HPV and health problems caused by HPV?

HPV (the virus): Approximately 79 million Americans are currently infected with HPV. About 14 million people become newly infected each year. HPV is so common that nearly all sexually-active men and women will get at least one type of HPV at some point in their lives.

Genital warts: About 360,000 persons in the U.S. get genital warts each year.

Cervical cancer: About 12,000 women in the U.S. get cervical cancer each year.

Other cancers that can be caused by HPV, including some vaginal, vulvar, penile, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers: Each year in the U.S., HPV is thought to cause an estimated
•2,100 vulvar cancers,
•500 vaginal cancers,
•600 penile cancers,
•2,800 anal cancers in women,
•1,500 anal cancers in men,
•1,700 oropharyngeal cancers in women,* and
•6,700 oropharyngeal cancers in men.*

*Note: Other factors, notably tobacco and alcohol use, may also play a role with HPV to cause these cancers.

About 21,000 of these cancers are potentially preventable by HPV vaccines.

Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is very rare. It is estimated that about 820 children get juvenile-onset RRP every year in the U.S. *

cdc.gov/std/hpv/stdfact-hpv.htm

This class of viruses is so ubiquitous and easily spread that no one should consider that their own “safe” behavior will guarantee that they won’t get one. Those young enough to be vaccinated ought to be vaccinated. It will not make sexual sins “safe”, but it will help keep what can be a deadly virus from getting around.

And yes, being sexually pure and selective about who you kiss will undoubtedly benefit “the herd”, too, because you will not be adding to the spread of viruses in the general population. Knowing that is a consolation for following moral law, though, not the reason.

If the scientists could ever make extramarital and premarital sex “safe”, after all, it would still infect the soul.
And that’s the other side of the coin. When we make arguments that rest on health statistics, we leave open the possibility in people’s minds that all they have to do is eliminate the health risk and the behavior then automatically becomes morally acceptable.

The question was “There are lots of examples of God’s indicating to us that certain acts are wrong like HIV…Can you think of any other indicators that God reveals to us about what’s wrong and right in the world?”

The correct answer is “no, getting sick is not a ‘revelation’ that someone has sinned”. We already have reliable revelations to teach us right from wrong. We do not need statistics from the CDC for that. The CDC gathers statistics not to stop the spread of sin, but to stop the spread of disease.

Why it is uncharitable to take exception in no uncertain terms to this “mistake”, which is really sort of a veiled suggestion to people who get these diseases that “they deserve it”, is beyond me. The original question contained a certain lack of charity, that is what they were trying to say, and it was necessary to say it.
