If unable to have children or adopt, can one still get married?

In talking with someone about homosexual marriage, I went on to explain that it is not possible since the union would be sterile - not open to life. It was then pointed out that many heterosexual couples that marry are not able to have kids - or even adopt (as in elderly couples). I am 45 years old and unable to have children. I would not be able to adopt either, so would it be okay for me to marry? I’m fine with either a yes or no answer, but If the answer is yes, how would I explain it to others in a conversation defending marriage as being between a man and woman only?
