If we pray for something and don’t receive an answer

As I stated above, you may not be able to distinguish between them, until circumstances change to reveal what God wants, or until your heart changes to accept whatever is occurring. Meanwhile, all you can do is keep praying. Prayer changes things, but God’s ways are not our ways and God is very very patient (unlike us).

You can certainly continue to pray, there isn’t a time deadline. On the other hand, only after a long time, I understood why for certain prayers the answer was ‘no‘ or ‘not now’. I give you an example. In our marriage with suffered a lot for infertility, our prayer was finally answered after years but meanwhile this suffering brought us closer to God and helped us to understand better the value and gift of human life.

If we pray fervently for something and don’t receive an answer (say within 12 months) is it a sign that we should not keep asking God for it…? Also how do we know what we are praying for is not the will of God?
A man was desperatly looking for a parking spot. Driving back and forth, back and forth, nothing. Finally he put his hands together and prayed. "God, please help me. All of a sudden he saw a car pulling out of a parking spot. He put his hands together again and said “God, never mind.”

Just keep praying for whatever it is you’re praying for. Like another poster said earlier, either he answers it or the situation/circumstances change that you no longer have to pray for that specific thing.

Every prayer is answered. Sometimes the answer is “wait”, sometimes it is “no” and sometimes it is “this is up to you”.
Also how do we know what we are praying for is not the will of God?
“Will this help or hinder my path to perfection and heaven?” is a good way to begin.

Blessings!
You see a horrible thing happening in your life. You are responding in terms of this world. The Bible has writings that direct our thinking. Try & think, like Jesus. We are Spirits, temporarily, here on Earth. Can you see the purpose of that person on Earth? Leading ppl to Jesus & Salvation, is our job. It’s hard to look at your family as being expendable, for the Salvation of someone’s soul.
Years ago, we had a terrible fight in the family. Dysfunctional families are fun. My 3 yr old niece almost died, that brought the family together, again.
Now, my one son, is tied up in emotional knots. Isn’t surrendering to Jesus. It’s like he’s in chains. I turned him back to God. He has a beautiful 5 yr old daughter. I’m terrified, God will allow, a negative to get his attention. God does not do bad things. But a soul is very important. He allows things in our lives to be changed to save a soul. Read Job. IDK! I ask, he uses me, if a negative has to get my sons attention. It may not be anything, I’m thinking. My life experiences affect my thinking.
Our children are Gods. We only have them in loan. SIGH!
I guess if YES, isn’t happening, believe it’s WAIT. Something will happen. It may not be the answer, for which, you are asking.
Somewhere, souls are being touched by your troubles.
Pray for Wisdom. Read your Bible, seek spiritual counsel from your priest. Remember the Sacrament of the Sick. It can be received monthly.
Teenage troubles: The answers don’t come quickly. Do ask your priest about Spiritual warfare. My adult, troubled son was calling his wife, horrible names in front of me. I raised my hand at him & took authority if this Spirit of hate & anger! He shut up & looked at me in surprise & stopped.
Your priest can guide you.
