If we're justfully punished in Purgatory, then why was Jesus punished?

Awesome. Thanks very much for the answer; God bless you all!🙂
So if Jesus did not die for our sins, we would have to burn in Hell for all eternity without any possibility in life for God to forgive us our sins, no matter how minor they were, right?

As Paul said, if Jesus didn’t rise from the dead, then we are all dead in our sins, so eat drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die.

We were just studying this subject and were reminded of where our hope rests. If we are found “in Christ”, covered in His Robe of Righteousness (under the covering of His blood), we have the following:

  1. remission of sin
    • redemption
      • justification
        • reconciliation
          • peace
            • a clear conscience
              • the promise of eternal inheritance
                • forgiveness of sin
                  • sanctification
                    • fellowship
                      • being cleansed from all unrighteousness
                        • being washed

Isn’t it exciting and faith building? This is directly from both the Apostles Peter and Paul.

Here are the verses that state the list I provided:

Ro 3:24-27 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

Ro 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

Mt 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Col 1:14,20 In whom (Christ) we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh (near) by the blood of Christ.

Heb 9:12-15,22 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance… And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

                          Heb 10:19, 20 ¶ Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

Heb 13:12,20 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate… Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

1Pe 1:2, 18-19 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

1Jo 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Re 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins** in his own blood**,

Peace and rest under the blood of Christ if we abide in Him by having our hearts fully surrendered to Him and His Lordship over our lives. Think about it… many of those verses are past tense, meaning those promises are OURS today, without doing anything else other than “forsaking our lives” for Him… by presenting our bodies as living sacrifices to Him.

Just to clarify, there is no wrath, no punishment, no additional payment, no guilt, and no condemnation to those who have forsook theirs old life and now live for Him; for those who believe that His blood and His offering were sufficient for the complete payment of sin. What Great News…it’s the Gospel!!! I like to tell it over and over again to myself. We serve a great God! Worthy is the Lamb Who sits upon the throne!

                          Be blessed,

                          Jeff

correct me if i’m wrong but i seem to have picked this up somewhere-

there are two levels of punishment for our sins, the eternal and the temporal
jesus had to suffer and die because the perfect sacrifice was required to pay for the eternal punishment. thus, it is said that without his sacrifice, there would be no chance of entering heaven.

but as pointed out by many on this thread, there is temporal punishment and that needs to be paid for. we pay for it partly through our sufferings on earth and partly through purgatory so that nothing unclean will enter heaven

can the learned ones on this forum correct me if i’m wrong on this
i’d be really grateful
thanks
