What do you believe?

If you are a “Protestant” or a Non-Catholic Christian, would you please share with us Catholics a summary of what it is that you actually believe?

I will be honest with you, as a Roman Catholic, I am confuse by so many different Christian denominations and it is difficult, if not impossible for me and some other Catholics here at CAF to keep up and the responds from some of our non-Catholic Christians friends here, because we don’t know what it is that you actually believe.

There are many of you out there, who seen to know with certainty what it is, that the Catholic Church “got wrong”. Therefore, it should be easy for them to tell us what it is that they believe their religion ‘got right”,
.
I have a general sense of what “Protestant” and what some non-Catholic Christians here believe, so when I post, I will often start with something like, “Some “Protestants” believe that…”

Then immediately, I will get a response back from a member here at CAF, who will say, I am a “Protestant” and I do not believe that. Well, want do I do now?

Moreover, what is a non-Denomination Christian religion?

Are there any wild or interesting beliefs out there? For instance, is the world going to end on 2012 or are aliens are real? Are there any Prophets out there who talk with God? Does anybody out there foresee the future? Are ghosts real? Can you speak to dead people? Have you ever witnessed or performed a miracle?

Does your church teach you about Catholicism? What have you heard?

What does your non-Catholic Christian Church teach you about Catholicism? Be honest and don’t pull and punches, we Catholics can it.

Please share with us Catholics a summary of what it is that you actually believe?

**Sheesh you asked a lot of questions in one topic! That is probably why so few answers. lol 😉

I believe in all that is in the Nicene Creed with the word catholic meaning universal. My beliefs are Arminian, That means I believe in free-will, conditional election, General Atonement, Holy Spirit can be resisted, and salvation can be lost if they fall into apostasy. Gathering to worship God, Baptism after repentance of sins (if there is infant Baptism there MUST be confirmation), and taking communion seriously with a group of fellow Christians are required by God.

The reason I hang out here is to try to help with that and at the same time, learn to defend my faith. You are always welcome to ask me if you are confused.
IF you learn the basic of tenants of these 7 groups, you will understand most protestants. there are some who mix them all up, but they are easy to refute when they do that:
  • Lutherans
  • Calvinists
  • Arminians
  • Brethren
  • Anabaptists
  • Anglican Communion
(Someone said I missed one, but I can’t remember who it was or what it was I missed)

Just realize that those 7 groups of there are very different than one another on things other than teh Nicene Creed. Discussions will go more smoothly if you state who you are directing things to rather than “protestants: Do you…?” Try “OSAS believers: Do you…?” or "Calvinists: do you… " etc. that way you can stay on a topic without getting sidetracked by all the people you weren’t really trying to address in the first place.
Moreover, what is a non-Denomination Christian religion?
Non-Denominational Christians are people who believe that all this bickering over stuff is detrimental to Christianity. they may be ANY one of the groups above or mix those up, because all Christians are welcome to worship together at a non-denominational church. (I have heard of some non-denominational churches being less welcoming of Catholics, but the ones I attended often welcomed Catholics and we’d have families attending that would attend our Church AND Mass every week due to marriages between Protestants and Catholics). The list of required doctrines is very small (otherwise people might disagree.) Expect a belief in the Trinity, and that Scripture is held solely OR at least above Tradition, expect them to hold whatever beliefs are the basic to still be defined as “Christian” rather than “Cult.” The individual person you talk to will naturally have beliefs beyond the basics taught by the non-denominational church, but those cannot be determined by the label non-denominational, you have to ask. Visiting these churches will seem that they are all very different from one another because there is an unintentional tendency to lean teachings towards the majority of the members beliefs rather than teaching all of the possibilities.
Are there any wild or interesting beliefs out there?
probably lol
For instance, is the world going to end on 2012
I’d say, we can’t know 😃
or are aliens are real?
no
Are there any Prophets out there who talk with God?
Yes, but I’m not one. God has spoken audibly to me but not with messages to give others and not often. Usually when I’m in trouble… :o “What ARE you doing?” etc.
Does anybody out there foresee the future?
God has sent me dreams before that showed me the future. Not something that happens often though. God sometimes allows me to be able to interpret other peoples dreams as well. Sometimes they tell the future, but usually they are personal rather than Prophecies.
Are ghosts real?
Yes. Well, “spirits” are. there are Demons, Angels and the spirits of people briefly on their way out of this world. I believe most “ghosts” are demons either out to create fear or to impersonate the dead.
Can you speak to dead people?
I once saw a spirit of a woman leaving here. She had died an hour before. Never occurred to me to try to talk to her. I just felt she was bidding me farewell and it was very peaceful.
Have you ever witnessed or performed a miracle?
I have not preformed a miracle. I have witnessed and been involved as the recipient of miracles though. I was cured of a disease, My mother was cured of Thyroid problems, and my dd still talks about the night God pushed our car 8 blocks home with the engine off.

Not really, answered in your thread on the topic.

Think of it this way. If you said I am an American and I want to know what the rest of the world believes about any given topic…you would get a bunch of respones like 'Italians think this in general…Russians think this in general". You would not expect to be able to summarize or understand all of anyones beliefs.
Same way with religion. Protestant simply means not Catholic for all practical purpose. It is not one belief system obviously and never has claimed to be. Its just a way to lump things together for classification purposes. If you seriously want to try to figure out what everyone believes, good luck!

Jimmy what I find interesting about this post is you are asking what Non-RCC beliefs are admitting you don’t understand. But then you proceed to create threads that have titles implying that you not only fully understand but disagree completely. So what is it you would like to know specifically??

Hello Rightlydivide,

Good point, I guess, I was looking for the “Short List” of doctrinal, or biblical interpretation differences.
Can anyone provide a “short list” of the differences, which exist between what “you” believe and what your Church “believes” as apposed to Catholic beliefs or doctrine?

Thank You 👍

I’m afraid my short list of 7 belief systems is as short as you’re likely to find. I cannot, make a short list of the differences between them all seven.

Perhaps you’d be in better shape to look at only two at a time. From the reading I’ve been doing, Calvinist and Arminian are the most common of Protestant belief systems. So those two would be a good place to start. I post the link to the-highway.com/compare.html for that often because it’s not too long and fairly unbiased as far as summaries go. Naturally they don’t cover everything since they are summaries, but they are a good place to begin. If you explore that site a bit, you will find the writers of it are Calvinist.

I dont see the point but sure:
We emphasize conversion. We actively try to find people who are not Christians.
We do not emphasize believe in any of the Marian dogmas.
We always baptize by immersion unless they are in a nursing home or something.
We sing more than you guys!
We have none of the liturgical elements.
We do not have an authority above the local church govt of elders/bishops.
You know…basic stuff.
I saw a UFO once though…not sure if that counts or not.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. AMEN.

Another one of Jimmy’s baiting threads.

O+, a “Protestant”
:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Are you sure that you are not ready to convert? You would make a fine Catholic 👍

A+ Catholic. :extrahappy:

Come on over and be A+ Catholic instead of A- Protestant 😃

I don’t think there is anything else I could do in this world except be ordained - 10+ years of higher education and 21 years in the parish. And I don’t think there is room for me and my wife and child in the Catholic Church.

Methodists, as well an Anglicans, have always adhered to the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds. That’s not just what I believe.

Hello Again O.S. Luke,

You know what like about you………………Everything! 👍

It sounds like you are almost qualified to apply to the Catholic priesthood.😃

You probably already know that we have many converts who were previously ordained Christian Ministers in ‘Protestant” Church’s and they later became Catholic Priests and Deacons. Cardinal John Henry Newman and G.K. Chesterton are among the many famous converts to Catholicism but I am sure you already knew this. 👍

There is an entire television show dedicated to converts, many whom were previously, Ministers in ‘Protestant” Church’s…
The Journey Home”… also here .

Deacons obviously can be married and it is my understanding that persons who are already married prior to becoming Catholic Priests can remain married.

Here is an Idea, when you retire become a Catholic Deacon, you would make a fine Catholic Deacon. 😃

Thank you for your post, God Bless,

I second that! O.S. Luke, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. You’re an excellent Christian and would make a great Catholic Deacon or Priest as well! Have you ever visited an Eastern Catholic parish? They’re always in need of more faithful and clergy :byzsoc: In my prayers. :byzsoc:

Hey, I need some help here…😃

I always believed that the Apostle’s Creed and the Nicene Creed are the best summary of what I believe. Everything else is pretty much commentary (to quote an ancient Jew). Roanoker

I explored that in detail several years ago - it was a very long and painful journey, I fear. I am at peace where I am, and feel confirmed to be here.

Thanks for your kind words.
