Rome sees the Orthodox Churches as “defective”; the Eastern Orthodox Church does not see the Pope of Rome or the Western Church as in communion with herself. Protestants may lump Orthodox together with the Catholics–but this is mostly due to a misunderstanding of what Orthodoxy is (i.e., the idea amongst many Protestants and even Catholics that Orthodoxy is simply Catholicism without the Pope, when in fact there are important theological and spiritual differences).
Yes you are right, but the union i speak is that allowed in the doctrine and no tthe union with Rome, they are considered the same but never equal to Rome, However, Pope John Paul II did recognized them as split brothers sharing a close relationship with us, i know that they are different, but much closer that the Lutherans or other Protestants, thanks for correcting my first mistake i think that what i meant was like the Pope Stated in recogniztion but not in Union, you are right. Love always Mike YBIC

Ok, I thought you were saying that Orthodox and Catholic are together One Church even though either sides fully realizes it. Pope Paul VI reportedly said that there is very little to separate Orthodox from Catholics in a common celebration of the Eucharist, or something like that. The quote reference is found in the CCC.

Yeah Him to, I almost forgot to mention Pope Paul Vi, it is the split that hurts Christianity, love Mike Always YBIC

Why assume you must be Roman catholic to believe in Jesus and to be a christian. We gain salvation with Jesus not the parish priest. There is no middle man. Jesus said he who believes in him shall have eternal life. He did not say not to eat meat on friday during lent to believe. The roman Catholic church makes it’s own rules and then claims that those who do not follow them are not christians. How judgemental is that? Only the father knows not those who post replies to CAF. SO now I will get a bunch of posts telling me I am wrong and that there is no Salvation outside the Roman Catholic church. The church Jesus founded is the Catholic church just not the roman catholic church but rather the holy catholic or universal church and a Chritian religon . He taught and preached on how those that followed him were to live as christians not as Roman catholics. Scripture should be the authority on the church not the church the authority on scripture.

No one said you must be Catholic to believe in Jesus Christ. Please provide a post from this thread where the claim that ONLY Catholics are Christian??

Yes, AMEN. We are saved by God’s Grace alone.

Sorry, the Church does not make rules, it reinforces the Teachings of Jesus taught to us by the Apostles and their successors. Those who refuse to obey these Teachings put themself outside the Holy Catholic Church. Most through ignorance. This does not mean they don’t believe in Jesus as their personal Lord and Saviour, it just means they aren’t adhering to ALL the Teachings of Jesus.

Please show me where a Catholic Teaching does not insist that only the Father knows the hearts of men, and we are not to judge.

Do you understand what no Salvation outside the Catholic Church really means? Will you open your heart to listen?

Not only do they claim to be an authority, but when a Catholic points scripture upon scripture providing with the only truth of God, they calim that they are saved by believing in Jesus Christ through faith and grace and by the Holy Bible alone, but by being submissive and obeying everything from God, and doing correct action and allowing God to correct us and humbling us, and by Obedeince and doing the will of God is the correct way. Many Protestants are against “the with actions alone we are not save, or that by following the law,” since according to them Jesus came to tear down the OT, but in reality Jesus Christ is our Savior and He came to make the Law of His Father or Our Father, Stronger and easier to adhere to, and we beleive in our conduct, following the Laws of God, the Holy Bible, traditons of the faithful, Traditions of the Church, Marian deotion, respecting her and calling her blessed as by Scripture, we follow the angels intructions, Our Separated brothers want Jesus Christ and Bible only and they do not respect the Law of God and the Word of God.

One can follow jesus and do all that he asks and adhere to all his teaching and not be a roman catholic. I am a Christian just not roman catholic and I am every bit a christian as any other.

?? I have no idea how to even respond to that Just read my signature that says it all

So you participate in the Mass? Because that’s one of His teachings. A very important one.

That was mature…

Your signature is offensive and ignorant. But whatever, 🤷 people are all entitled to their opinions.

I guess if you can’t think of an intelligent response to a post then you just call it stupid and refuse to answer… Try the ‘treat others as you would like to be treated’… Hmmmm I wonder who said that? 😉 I doubt you would like to have someone call you stupid. Try a little humility. There is more than one way to defend your faith. Christ did it perfectly. He knew when to be outraged and when to tell Peter to put the blade down. 👍

w_stewart,

The Orthodox Church historically, in her documents, refers to herself as the Catholic Church. This is most true when speaking of each local Church. Even today in the U.S. you find “Ukrainian Catholic” churches that are actually Orthodox churches (in the Eastern Orthodox communion).

Your assumption that once the Great Schism occurred the East stopped referring to itself as members of the body Catholic (supposedly recognizing the Western Church as the Catholic Church) is wrong.
Any organization can call itself the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches are not an exemption. The fact is, the name Orthodox was not known until the Great Schism. Before that, there was only one Catholic Church and that was the one headed by the successor of Peter. Orthodox Churches never recognized the authority of the Popes and therefore they are not the true Catholic Church.

I guess saying “because I dont want to be” wouldnt really cut it as an answer.

I suppose its because I dont agree with the teachings and the “ideas” that the church has. To me, they simply dont add up.

There is also a reluctence to associate with certain…“mind sets” that makes it easy to not want to become catholic. This leads into the fear of joining/obtaining such “mind sets” if one becomes catholic, which I would rather not do.

Please bear in mind that I am not a protestant, I actually dont agree with many teachings from their varied churches. The question was quite specific about being or not being catholic and I am answering that as diplomatically as I can.

What teachings/ideas/mind sets, specifically, are you referring to?

Thats the thing, I cant really express that and remain diplomatic unfortunatly. Someone will take offence and/or label me as “anti-catholic” no matter how I word things, which makes it difficult to answer the question asked because it is basically asking for “anti-catholic” responses by its very nature (asking people what they saw wrong with catholism).

There are also those who would use it as an oppotunity to dismiss and debase me because what I have put in my religion (my own) and others who will see it as a chance to attack protestant faiths (kind of a reason why I put in that disclaimer).

Well, I guess you won’t be having any dialog then since you decline to talk about anything. There’s little point in making reference to “teachings/ideas/mind sets” that you disagree with if you refuse to say what they are. What’s the point of posting anything at all in that case? What’s the point of even registering on this forum?

Unless you start doing things like referring to the Eucharist as our ‘wafer god’ telling us that we’re a bunch of pagans for believing in the communion of saints, or referring to a eucharistic procession as “carrying Jesus around in a container”, that is unlikely. Plenty of people express respectful disagreement with our beliefs and manage to not get painted with the “anti-Catholic” brush.
