You are correct. I was only looking to answer the question posted,
not to start a “point for discussion”

You are also right when you said:

"What you posted initially was a long list of things that many people have seen before and, quite frankly, find it tiresome that people keep bringing it up as if it was some new discovery…

It isn’t new, but it is relevant to the question asked.

If you post a question like:

"If you are a Christian, what is the real reason for you not being a Catholic?,

you should be prepared for disagreeable answers.

May God’s blessing go with you!.
OK, well, just so you know, it’s your history too 🙂

Just to answer the original question:
First off, I started out as a cradle Catholic, attended Catholic school, etc. I first attended an Episcopal service with a boyfriend who was also attending RCIA to learn about my faith, but didn’t go back for years. I attended a second Episcopal service many years later to play music, and returned a number of times because of their pipe organ (while still attending Catholic Church regularly).

Things changed much later for two main reasons, one personal and one more philosophical/political.

I was married in the Catholic Church, but only after going through a lot of work to try to obtain an annulment for my then fiance. This included a visit to a priest who said that he would expedite the annulment if my finace’ would do some carpentry work on the parish hall (they couldn’t get a permit for the work due to safety reasons and wanted to get it done under the table, so to speak). He refused, but it turns out we were advised by this priest incorrectly and because his first marriage was to a Catholic but not in the Church, it wasn’t considered valid and no annulment was needed. So, after a long time of chasing this stuff around, we were able to get married in the Church. Sadly, the marriage didn’t last and now many years later, I’ve remarried. My husband and I were married in the Episcopal church, and while I have grounds for an annulment from my ex-husband, he’s not interested in pursuing it (he wasn’t Catholic anyway) and I’m still pretty bothered by the whole thing anyway. So, basically, I’m not really welcome in the Catholic Church anymore, unless we get an annulment. If I did go through that, I could return, I imagine, but would have to re-join a Church that teaches that salvation isn’t possible outside the Church (which would leave out my husband, brother and so on).

So, that’s the personal reason. As far as politically and philosophically, the things I loved about the Catholic Church seem to be changing, as I feel there is a big swing in recent years toward a more conservative/traditional faith. I grew up on stories of Fr. Berrigan, Dorothy Day, Fr. Camara and Bishop Oscar Romero, and am having a hard time with a Church that doesn’t seem to be as outspoken against war and poverty as it seemed to be 20-40 years ago.

I do miss many things about the Catholic Church, and attend mass (without receiving Communion, of course) when I’m visiting my folks, but I do feel that I’ve found a home in the Episcopal Church, where I’ve recently been received.

Actually, no, All my posts are still here. What exactly was it that I said that was considered ‘bad’?

“… That should tell you something. I wish you non-Catholics would just plain STOP trying to run down the TRUE Catholic Faith.”

I answered the question posted here:

If you are a Christian, what is the real reason for you not being a Catholic?

If you can’t deal with history, I’m sorry. If telling the truth equals
" trying to run down the TRUE Catholic Faith" , perhaps there are problems in “the TRUE Catholic Faith”

"You will have to face God someday with all that on your soul, if you don’t watch out. You are fighting GOD and HIS true Church. "

I am not “fighting GOD and HIS true Church.” We ALL must face God, you and me both.

I love God, and all true believers. I may not agree with the RCC, but I have respect for all Catholics and Christians.

“If you don’t like us, go start yourself a Forum you can run your mouth off all you want if it makes you feel any better.”

I’m sorry, I thought this was the Non-Catholic Religions section.

“I’m sick of hearing you. I have no sympathy for you as long as you are so hateful. If you were really trying to be understanding and friendly about it that would be different.”

I am trying to understand. That’s why I answered the question in the first place.

" You don’t HAVE to be a Catholic to be kind, understanding and friendly. "

And, obviously, you don’t have to be a pagan to be rude and discourtious.

"You are the most ungratefull people I have ever seen. "

Excuse me… have we met before?

“You don’t even appreciate that it was the Catholic Church, founded by Jesus Christ, 2,000 years old. lead by a Pope, promised the “Gates of HELL” would NEVER prevail against it, NO MATTER WHAT, do you get that, NO MATTER WHAT, humans do over history. Look how unfaithful SOME of the OT Jewish people were all the thousands of years they were led by God Himself, but they STILL kept alive in the HUMAN race, the belief in the ONE TRUE GOD. Nothing they did destroyed that. So guess what, NOTHING us weak, sinful human beings do can ever destroy or change the TRUTHS of the Doctrine of the HOLY Catholic Church. And I really think YOU KNOW that or you wouldn’t be so bent on trying to convince yourself otherwise. Your certainly NOT convincing me of it, I just feel sorry for you because you are missing the boat by far. You wouldn’t even have a Bible if it weren’t for the TRUE Catholic Church. Get over your hatred and maybe we can communicate.”

Could you please give an example of this “Hatred”, please?

I am sorry to have provoked this outburst, and to have caused you such pain. This wasn’t my intention.

May God keep and protect you and your family.

This is kind of why I posted my response to the main question the way that I did.

Mate there is quite a bit of that post that is pretty offensive and unchariatble to us “non-catholics” and the whole post comes off as being obnoxious (thats not meant as an insult, its an observation of that particular post).

The very nature of the question being asked (ie: If you are a Christian, what is the real reason for you not being a Catholic?) does actually ask for responses that put the catholic church in a negative light. You cant really say why you are not catholic without being negative about the catholic church.

It might be better for yourself if you didnt read this thread due to its content.

It could be an idea to lay off the generalisations about us “non-catholics”, they are not exactly encouraging.

Jesus Christ started and declared: Matthew 16 “…you are Peter and on this rock I will build My Church and the Gates of Hell shall not prevail against it’…” (As history clearly shows, outsider/“insider” attacks on the Church have proven to be a complete and total disaster for each and every one of those who incite them) —which means, He will defend it from within and from without, against all adversaries for all time. --GOD has said He will be with His Church (Ecclesia, “assembly, congregation, council”) forever! I will never leave you, neither will I forsake you. Heb13:5; John 14:16 “…And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.” --In Mt 28:20, Jesus said, “and I am with you all days, even until the end of the world." Jesus also said --“to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” Ephesians 3:21 That means He will be with His Church every day in every century until the end of time, no matter how often the devil interferes, which he obviously did/does due to some of the dishonest and corrupt clergy members through the centuries; After all the devil, A.K.A. accuser is seething with pent up rage towards Jesus’ Church: “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Revelations 12:17 Jesus even predicted such corruption was inevitable: “It is impossible that scandals should not come: but woe to him through whom they come!” Luke 17:1 "And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.” Matthew 10:36. "Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you: Away from me, you evildoers!” Matthew 7:21-23 “Take heed unto yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit hath made you bishops, to feed the church of the Lord which he purchased with his own blood. I know that after my departing grievous wolves shall enter in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them…” Acts 20:28 Let us not forget the scandals and human weaknesses of Jesus Christ’s very own inner circle. They are His personally chosen Apostles, the very foundation of His Church: “…built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone” (Ephesians 2:19-22). One betrayed Him (Luke 22:48). One denied Him, not once but three times (Matthew 26:69-75). One doubted Him (John 20:24-29). All ran away from Him (Mark 14:50). Note that all of them, except one, are now saints.Any merely human organization with such members would have collapsed long ago. I believe that God will protect His Church from error as HE has promised, even though he uses fallible, sinful men for that purpose. And if sinful men such as David and Peter could write inspired Scripture; the very words of God, then it is utterly plausible that God could grant the gift of infallibility concerning the correct collection and selection of doctrine to men in certain well-defined situations. The second scenario is easier to believe than the first, yet somehow Protestants have no problem adhering to the first, while vehemently denying the second proposition as “impossible,” “implausible,” “unbiblical,” etc.

Division and dissension runs amok outside the Catholic Apostolic Church; Instead of castigating the catholic church as a whole for something done long ago by individual apostates claiming to be catholic within the church, show me a protestant church that adheres to following! You can’t because the protestant reformation jettisoned institutional authority, in favour of sola scriptura and private interpretation which inevitably led to the thousands of disparate churches we see today.
The Church Must be One:
Jn 10:16; – there shall be one fold and one shepherd
Eph 4:3-6; – one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father
Rom 16:17; – avoid those who create dissensions
1 Cor 1:10; – I urge that there be no divisions among you
Phil 2:2; – be of same mind, united in heart, thinking one thing
Rom 15:5; – God grant you to think in harmony with one another
Jn 17:17-23; – I pray that they may be one, as we are one
Jn 17: 23; – that they may be brought to perfection as one
1 Cor 12:13; – in one spirit we were baptized into one body
Rom 12:5; – we, though many, are one body in Christ
Eph 4:4; – one body, one Spirit, called to one hope Col 3:15; – the peace into which you were called in one body
Mt 16:18-19; – upon this rock I will build my Church
Mt 18:17-18; – if he refuses to listen even to Church…
Mt 28:18-20; – go baptize and teach all nations
Mk 16:16; – go to the whole world and proclaim the gospel
Lk 10:16; – whoever hears you, hears Me; rejects you, rejects Me
Jn 14:16,26; – Holy Spirit is with you always, teach and remind everything…
Jn 16:12; – Spirit of truth will guide you to all truth
1 Tim 3:15; – Church is the pillar and foundation of truth
Jn 15:16; – Jesus chose special men to be his apostles
Jn 20:21; – Jesus gave the apostles their own mission
Lk 22:30; – Jesus gave them a kingdom
Mt 16:18; – Jesus built Church on Peter, the rock
Jn 10:16; – one shepherd to shepherd Christ’s sheep
Lk 22:32, Jn 21:17; Peter appointed to be chief shepherd
Eph 4:11; – church leaders are hierarchical
1 Tim 3:1, 8; 5:17; – identifies the roles of bishops, priests, deacons
Tit 1:5; commission for bishops to ordain priests

Well, I guess that is a good start… 😃 like the difference between Junior Varsity and Varsity…😛 I am on the Varsity Team…We’ll be waiting for you, when you are ready to move up….

God Bless You 👍
Are we all not Christians? Your denomination helps you become a better Christian not the other way around! I know they are some Christian denominations that bash others. This is wrong. As far as I know now one has the corner on God!.

You seem to have misunderstood the question this thread is based around.

Its not about why christians should be catholic, thats a different topic, its about why they did not become catholics.

How about we all stay on the topic at hand?

I don’t think that will help.

I’ve been looking around these posts, as I am new here. It seems the policy here to ignore uncomfortable facts, and when that can’t be done, insult the poster or delete the offending posts

Not much room for debate or dialog here,i’m afraid.

I think you misunderstand the thread. It says, "If you are Christian, what is the real reason for you for you not being Catholic?? Well heres a few reasons why you SHOULD be Catholic.

the POPE does have universal jurisdiction, he is the head of Christ’s Universal, Catholic Church, The 265th Pope going back to St. Peter. And I am NOT kidding, that is the truth, like it or not. The Bible was given to the Catholic Church, and it is ment to go hand in hand with the Sacred Tradition given to the Catholic Church by Jesus thru Peter and the Apostles.
When the Protestant reformation separated from the True Catholic Church and tried to use the Bible as their sole rule of faith, they have divided over and over again trying to figure out how to interpret it. There are well over 40,000 different protestant denominations in only 500 years and none of them have a real leader to try to keep them together. They are floundering and getting weaker all the time. They allow divorce and remarriage, even among their clergy, birth control, abortion and even homosexuality. That is NOT following what Christ taught us thru his Apostles and His Church.
Our Pope is the one that Jesus gave the KEYS to THE KINGDOM of Heaven, gave Peter the power to loose and bind,
Peter has authority over the Apostles, all you have to do is read the Acts of the Apostles and you will see that. HE gave the Apostles the power to forgive sins, gave them the power to teach in HIS name, all the truths HE gave taught them. And the Catholic Church still does that in spite of its weak and sinful members. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to protect HIS Church from ALL ERROR. And if you looked into the Church itself instead of keeping you nose in some of its sinful members, you will see that.

While the Catholic church regrets and asks forgiveness for its sinful members, it is NOT the cause of their sins, they have failed, NOT the Church. Even among the 12 Apostles that were chosen by Jesus Himself, one was a traitor. But that didn’t stop Jesus from founding HIS Church and giving it the power to Teach, Govern and Sanctify in HIS name. And NOTHING will stop Jesus’ Catholic Church from teaching HIS truths till the “End of Time”. 2,000 years of all the trials it has gone thru and still comes thru strong and true, ought to show us that Jesus ment what he said. “The Gates of HELL will NOT prevail against it.” Face it folks, the ONE, HOLY, Catholic and Apostolic Church is here to stay. and will be till the end of time.

Im sorry but this doesnt make any sense.

You quoted the threads title (which is pretty clear on what the topic is about) and then promptly come out with something that is the opposite of it.

One has to ask if you are actually interested in the reasons why people are not catholic?

If you are interested, then perhaps you should refrain from trying to change the topic. If you are not interested, then perhaps you should ignore this thread instead of trying to change the topic.

Elric…

I apologize for changing the topic! I simply couldn’t give you an unbiased viable reason, from a Christian or non-Catholic perspective for not being a Catholic! So, in lieu of that, I, as Memaw did, chose to give objective reasons for being a Catholic, being that this forum is Catholic by nature…

God bless…🙂

Then why don’t you give us the reasons why you are not Catholic and we can go from there. I wasn’t changing the topic, I was just adding to the conversation.

As someone who was an Episcopalian before becoming Catholic, I can say from my own experience, and others that I have talked to, that most people who are not Catholic have no idea what the Catholic church is all about. They may think they know, but they often have a lot of misunderstanding.

When I was Episcopalian, I figured the church was “almost Catholic” except for a few things here & there. I was completely wrong. There is a lot of misinformation out there (such as the preposterous idea that Catholics aren’t Christians) so I would venture a guess that a lot of people aren’t Catholic simply because what little they do know about the Catholic church is incorrect.
You are sooo right Melanie Anne, they really don’t know about the beauty of the Catholic Church or they would all become Catholic. I sincerely wish there were some way we could convince them to check it out for themselves. My mom used to say, “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink,” and I am afraid that goes for people too.

I already did, well some anyway.

part 2:thumbsup:
Sola scriptura, a 16th century protestant man-made doctrine denies all authority and adheres to the bible as the final authority, and individual private interpretation; both of which are clear violations of that man-made doctrine: “For laying aside the commandment of God (Jesus established a church, a command of God and protestants reject it), ye hold the tradition of men…” Mark 7 —and after the break from the C.C. literally thousands of protestant churches based on this man-made doctrine, with their own unique traditions handed down to them by a man have cropped up. (this has always boggled my mind) The Holy Spirit as you will soon see, was sent to the Catholic Apostolic Church by Jesus Christ and that church is allowed, just as the prophets of old were, to interpret Holy Scripture and no other! “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” 1peter 20

According to the bible, Jesus established a church built on Peter and the apostles and the prophets to “teach” and “preach” the good news. The Bible is not a self interpretive collection of books. Although many have taken it upon themselves to do so and look what has happened; , thousands of different churches claiming to be led by the Holy Spirit, all with their own unique truths handed down to them via man-made traditions. The Sacred Scriptures, the bible Protestants so dearly cling to, came into this world through the Catholic Apostolic Church which has safeguarded it and passed it down without error, due to the fact that the Holy Spirit has been guiding Her, through every century, as the bible does indeed attest? The Bible clearly says if you have a problem you are to take it to the church, not refer to your bible, and it says the church, not the bible is the Pillar and Foundation of Truth and it says the church is “house of God” built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and this Apostolic Church will last through all generations, forever and ever: “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church (not refer to the bible); and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.” —“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church (not write a collection of books); and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." Matthew 16:16-18 --"I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 18:17-18 This is Jesus giving complete authority to his church!

Amen, Joe,
and the past 2,000 years of the Catholic Church prove that Jesus keeps HIS promise. But the past 500 years only prove that the Bible (while ment to belong to the True Catholic Church), does not carry the same promise. Or else soooo many people could not distort its meaning like they have. The Holy Spirit protects the teachings of the Catholic Church and also Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture, as long as it is in the hands of the Catholic Church. Separated from the True Church and look what happens, over 40,000 different denominations disagreeing over what it means. Think about it!!!

However, not everyone is welcome in (or back in) the Catholic Church.
IF there is a will, theres a way, sorry you had a bad experience with a priest on the annulment But he is NOT the Church, and the Church DOES NOT say outside the Church there is no salvation, please, that is sooo old and run down, it is pathetic. The Catholic Church has the fullness of the Faith in every way, all seven Sacraments, the teachings given by Jesus, (Doctrine), the authority to teach, govern and sanctify. etc, etc. but until you talk to a priest that will truly help you with your particular situation, you won’t know that. But if you just stay in the mindset you have, you may never take that first step. The Catholic Church leaves everyones salvation in God’s Hands. SHE teaches what Christ commissioned her to do and protects her from all error. But people can error and that is what that priest did in your case. I wouldn’t give up on the Church tho because of one priest. Get to know the Faith and you will love it I am sure.
