Matthew 6:14-15

God doesn’t forgive your sins if you don’t forgive others.
How much is this true?

By confession sins are forgiven, if you do not forgive others how would these sins be forgiven?

As I can see you are an atheist for now. What is the meaning of your question, what are you interested in finding out?

In what you believe to be the answer, I am interested in how others view it.

More or less yes. Part of having a contrite heart is forgiving others. Having that humbleness. The confessional is not a magicians booth. It is a place to go and exercise your contrition just as forgiving others does.

I think what he is referring to is The Lord’s Prayer:

Forgive our tresspasses as we forgive those who tresspass against us.

It is true inasmuch as that is what we ask for in prayer, and inasmuch as that is what we are told concerning God’s love. It would be quite convenient if we were forgiven but we could hold a grudge (or worse, hate) those who have offended us.

This is in fact a striking tenet that characterized Christianity: the commandment to “love our enemies and forgive those who persecute us”. This was unprecedented. And the reason people would (and still do) follow it is because of our belief that such is the way by which we ourselves are forgiven our offenses.

That is not to be confused with sacramental confession by which we are forgiven by God through the Church of the offenses we made to God and the Church (meaning - the community of all the faithful). Such sins include those who, according to human standards, “harm no one”, but that actually harm ourselves and offend the dignity of other fellow men. What happens in the sacrament is the supernatural infusion of the sanctifying baptismal grace which is lost in the case of grave sins, whereby we believe our soul is mortally wounded. It is a purely spiritual matter involving the soul. Now, even sacramental confession is invalid (meaning, the sin is not forgiven) if we have not firmly repented of our offense and attempted (or decided to attempt) reparation (whether it be reconciliation with someone, asking someone to forgive us, etc.).

Confession is not a magic formula which ignores reality!

In order to be forgiven, it’s my understanding we need to meet certain requirements. One is that we are truly sorry and repentant. If we don’t forgive others, seems Christ said he wouldn’t forgive us, either.

👍 Not to forgive is a symptom of pride.

The bible says you will be judged by how you judge others it does not say God will not forgive you. So expect the same as you judge.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Christ told us a story about a man who owed the king a debt greater than he would ever be able to repay, like 100 years’ salary. The king was going to sell the man, his wife, and all his children into slavery! The man pleaded with the king and the king forgave the debt.

As the man left the palace, he saw his neighbor and yelled for the police! Arrest that man! he said. I lent him 2 cents and he hasn’t paid me back!

This caused such a ruckus everyone knew about it and someone told the king. The king called the man back and said:
‘You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me. 33 Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?’ 34 Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt.

35 “That’s what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.”(St Matthew 18:21-35)

to be forgiven you have to have sincere repentance and even often overcoming shame not to come to our God.

God bless
