If you believe giving to the Catholic Church is an endorsement of sex abuse and pedophilia, consider this

I don’t have any links unfortunately, but I’ve heard people say that if you donate to the Catholic Church or if you go to church, you’re endorsing sex abuse and pedophilia. Now consider this; there’s probably more cases of sex abuse in schools. It’s no secret and we all know about it. Therefore by the logic of these anti-Catholics, if you send you’re kids to school or if you support education, you must be endorsing sex abuse. Oh wait, they’ve never come out and said that? Interesting

There’s also been a number of pedophilia cases in the Boy Scouts. So logically, if you donate to the boy scouts or if you support them or if your child is a member, you must be endorsing pedophilia. Oh wait, they’ve never come out and said that either? Interesting

Now, I don’t believe if you support education or the Boy Scouts means you support pedophilia, but these people who claim that supporting the Church is wrong don’t have a problem with teachers or the Boy Scouts. Seems illogical to me.

In an era of rational thought, why are people being so irrational?

I think people’s issue is that sex abuse in the school system and in the Boy Scouts is not covered up, but prosecuted, and removed from situations where he can hurt more kids.Teachers go to jail for abusing students. Boy Scout learders go to jail for pedophilia. A very big part of the issue is that Priests are being bounced around from region to region and NOT being prevented from hurting kids, and not being punished/defrocked, and cases keep popping up where the priest has just been merely moved around. We also haven’t had people come out and say that it’s better to keep the tone down or it will ruin the reputations of schools or the Boy Scouts. The focus was on punishing the perpetrator, and damage control is done by just that, not covering it up.

It’s irrational to think that coverups in the Church aren’t happening, though it is questionable exactly who is responsible. It’s irrational to ignore the fact that priests who were accused of sex crimes were bounced from community to community where they continued to hurt children, but again, pinning the responsibility on one particular person is proving difficult. It’s also irrational to think that pedophiles, not matter what they choose for a vocation, aren’t smart enough to dupe everyone around them into thinking that they are ‘totally fine’ so that they are trusted with kids again.

It’s also irrational to think that the Church isn’t in need of some housecleaning. Defenders of Benedict say that he’s doing just that. I hope he is. We’ll see in 20 years if more cases start popping up. Hopefully whatever he’s doing will ensure the safety of the children in our parishes today and we won’t have all these cases pop up later. Because it’s also irrational to think the problems are gone, until ample time is allowed for them to actually appear - or not appear. That’s when we’ll know if steps taken to correct the situation are working.

Hmm…I’ve heard people that protest Catholic Churches say “Every person who puts a dime in the collection plate is paying the salary for pedophile priests.”

It’s sad, really.
