You raise an interesting question for sure. I believe that the statement “Remember me when you enter your kingdom” was a statement of faith. If it was not then Jesus’ reply to the Thief would not have made sense.Yes the thief. The most interesting character, and most fortunate, in human history. I wonder where he was when Jesus was giving his ministry? Busy thieving? I wonder if he stole to feed his family or if he stole for the sake of stealing like Augustine?
Were the words “Remember me when you enter your kingdom.” a statement of genuine faith? Or was it inauthentic; merely a statement of compassion directed toward the dying man Jesus who was being mocked for no apparent reason, and who the thief may have believed to be insane?
I believe that this is possible because, for three years Jesus had done many extraordinary and supernatural things. He was the talk of the country for sure. I am sure many heard about what he did and said even though they may have never seen him before.
The Good Thief is somewhat encouraging to me, becuase who knows what is going on in someone’s mind and heart before their soul separates from their body. And it shows that there is always hope.
God bless.
