I’d base any new country on the U.S. Constitution, except this time specifically spell out limits on government: Must have balanced budgets, cap taxes, no Ponzi-funded social programs, one-term in office, etc.
And absolutely no way for those in gov’t to legislate new benefits for themselves, but all such perks must go to public referendum, to be held the third year of each presidency.

We are stuck with the governmental gravy train, but if the USC were to be used anew, they should learn from our mistakes.

Well considering there is no “perfect” country, because no matter what…if the people, society and culture are morally bankrupt, so goes the nation 😛

So if I could form a new country, I’d like to be Big Brother of Oceania

lol! 😃

I just want to add in that historically, monarchs never came anywhere close to possessing the amount of power that the President of the United States of America has.

Most monarchs were not tyrants. The number of monarchs throughout all of history is astronomical. Very few were tyrants. Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, these people were not monarchs. Most of them somehow arose to power in republics, not monarchies.

It was always top priority for a monarch to ensure the happiness, loyalty, and support of his governed. It was much easier to overthrow a regime back then than it ever would be to overthrow a modern Federal Government such as that of America. People were not really subject to the crown on a physical level. The crown had little power by today’s standards, and if the people weren’t satisfied, the king’s head would be on a platter shortly. People also enjoyed more freedom than we like to give history credit for. In the good ol USA, we are simply brain washed to believe that monarchs are Satan, and that there was no such thing as freedom or liberty until George Washington woke up one day, called up his buddies on his iPhone, and decided that there shouldn’t be kings or popes anymore.

My husband and I often fantasize about emigrating to one of the constitutional monarchies of northern Europe (Belgium, Denmark, etc.). Universal health care, affordable higher education, functioning social safety nets, environmentally and socially progressive, good cheeses…😛

👍 i hear that!!

…what form of government would you want and where would you want it to be?

I ask this in the SJ forum because it is a social issue and to ask if it would be justified?

Please, no discussions about any current country’s failings/benefits. And let’s not get overly worked up, either. Let’s keep this a straight up discussion of options. Thank you. :tiphat:
Lets see The government I would like Palingenetic ultra nationalism. Which is a big fancy word for class collaboration.Somewhere with some oil or other abundant resources. Not and island or anything land locked, You can get surrounded. With the church and state helping each other. People who are elected must be endorsed by the Church.

First off, campaigning for election would be limited to 6 months. No mention of your opponent or his party in your campaign ads. an equal number of members of each political party, selected by each party on the supreme court. The top vote getter in a presidential election is President, the candidate that comes in second is VP.

I never believed that monarchs were Satan. But there is no denying that royal families and nobilities lived in the lap of luxury on the the shoulders of everybody else. We don’t need that anymore.

I would create an island based on John Lennon’s song “Imagine”. I wouldn’t call it a country. We wouldn’t associate ourselves with any nationality… we would just be human!

It would be a truly communist society (not the evil communist most americans think of…a TRUE communism where everyone is 100% equal and free).

Good, go there and don’t bother the rest of us. 👍

Funny how the Catholic Church for centuries supported such social hierarchy, nobilities, and monarchies.

Only now, in our post-modern, post-enlightenment love affair with liberalism do we object.

The Catholic Church is in structure very similar to a monarchy. No surprise.

However, that isn’t Church teaching.

My understanding is that the Catholic Church used to believe in the hierarchy of man by birth. I think they took this from Aristotle?

Anyways… aristocracy I think basically means “rule by the best” and that kind of overlapping with the divine right of kings maybe. Or maybe I’m wrong. Dunno.

I don’t have a big problem per se with monrachy. I’ll admit it’s very foreign and strange to me being I was reared American. Somehow it doesn’t drive the Brits and Thais insane though. It would never work her in the Sates though.

That’s easy.

WHAT: A Catholic constitutional monarchy headed by a great, benevolent king

WHERE: An O’Neil cylinder since there are no uninhabited continents left on earth. Alternatively, a Stanford Torus Ring would do.

And who would spend the US$trillions for construction and transportation??

I would establish a propertarian monarchy in North America. (1) because a propertarian monarchy is basically a businessman-entrepreneurial type of control and since corporations are often IMO more efficient than nation-states, I want the constitution to take this form.

(2) North America is the location since I suspect that it is one of the most resource rich nations and with its harbors and mountains it also seems very defensible.

Let’s conscript Bill Gates! Press-gang him and convert him to Catholicism! His wife supposedly is Catholic, right, so he’s already got a sort of head-start connection…

JK!

😉

Not enough.

He only has billions not trillions.

Each Space Shuttle cost between $1B and $2B and that was just a seven person spacecraft. What you are describing would start at $1T just for the empty shell.
