If you could get away with it, would you steal a million dollars?

Sure, absolutely if I could get away with it.

It’s a fact, I can resist anything but temptation!

But here’s the catch…we can’t “get away with it”…you will have to answer to God for the mortal sin of knowingly and willfully stealing an amount that most certainly constitutes grave matter.

Peace
James

If that was an absolute protection guarantee, I knew from whom or what I was stealing, hey, maybe, depending on the circumstances.

Yes you can resist temptation. Its your CHOICE to give into it. You don’t have to, you chose to. Nobody is making you take that money, its all on you buddy.

I sure hope you were being sarcastic or you got some moral issues to work on. Try praying for the holy spirit to give you guidance.

be honest now :ehh:

🍿
Tempting but no; especially considering I won’t get out of purgatory until I pay the last penny and that’s if I repent. Heck if I don’t repent then its Hell for yours truly.

I think the point of this is what is your temptation. For me it isn’t money. Not even loads of it…or a briefcase full! For me, love and beauty are the lures. For others it is money, power, prestige, ease. Its just an intellectual exercise. But hey, some of us would steal it. And some of us may be intolerable jerks or profligate wastrels! Its all sin and its all odious to God, who is HOLY. Of course we will pay even to the last farthing. But you know several saints have said that, but for the grace of God, they would surely fall into mortal sin and be damned.

If you found it in a briefcase you know its stolen. If you turn that in it will just sit on a shelf in the evidence room, wont it? If you keep it you might be an unwitting player in aa sting.

Money? I wouldn’t keep it. Now if it was a briefcase full of loose gemstones…
Or some rare (old) classical records, impossible to find otherwise, that are not yet in your collection?

No, I’d know I was a thief and that the moment I stole it, God the Blessed Trinity would leave my heart and I would be at that moment alone in a deep spiritual sense, separated from God my maker- That’s a truly horrible thought! The separation from God should never be willfully chosen, it’s bad and you really don’t know when and in what circumstances you’ll die.

Temptation is called so, because it’s desirable to us- so obviously that’s a factor. If you are in personally desperate financial circumstances, you might even convince yourself that the money is God’s answer to your prayers, so depending on the situation, it may be a greater/lesser temptation. But realizing that you’re choosing to separate yourself from God should feel you with horror and counter the pull of the temptation.

No. It’s not my right to take it, and if I did, I know I would feel terribly guilty. Plus then you’d have to worry about all the charges that would be pressed against you once truth comes out.

Its funny you asked this because I was thinking the same thing the other day when I watched the movie “psycho”. The lady stole $40,000… and even then I just kept thinking that I’d feel terrible if I ever did anything like that.
The question said, AND GET AWAY WITH IT

Well, you wouldn’t really get away with it.

At some point, one day, you’d have to explain this to God.
Don’t think He’d be too pleased.
The way I read the question was that there was no penalty; civil or divine. In other words would you steal if there was no punishment or would you say no because it’s wrong not because you’re afraid of punishment. Correct me if I’m wrong but that’s how I read it.

I understood the question as meaning there is no civil punishment, that is, there is no way you can get caught. I didn’t interpret the question as no divine punishment. I don’t wish to sound “holier than thou” but even without divine punishment, I wouldn’t steal the money, simply because it’s wrong. However, if the money were absolutely needed to save someone’s life, I might steal it in that situation only.

The question said, AND GET AWAY WITH IT
Right. Well either way, no I would not do it. Not a chance in you know what. 😃 And thats the truth. I might not get busted, but I would by God, and the guilt would kill me.

And EVEN IF THERE WAS NO GOD, I STILL would feel too guilty to do it.

So whether this is divine or non, I don’t care, I STILL would NOT do it.

If by “could get away with it” you mean that it wasn’t a sin by God’s law and there was no possible way to be temporally or spiritually punished for it, why not? All evil that met those conditions would be acceptable right?

Depends from whom. If it’s a charitable organization sending seeds to starving African countries, I could not because I would lose sleep over it and be overwhelmed with guilt. From Paul McCartney or another billionaire, sure. I would only relieve him of some of his excess money and basically take from the rich and give to the poor (that would be me, sort of). I’ve wondered for much of my adult life what life with great financial werewithal would be like, I wouldn’t let that opportunity pass me by.

The many “Yes” answers truly saddens me…:imsorry:

I just don’t understand how people who profess to be Christians can say, with forethought, that they would commit this mortal sin…

To all Christians who answered yes…What will you tell God when you stand before Him???

Peace
James

That’s the same way the snake wanted Eve to “read the question” as well…In truth there is no “get away with it”…

Me too. Quite sad. What happened to being an upstanding individual and doing the right thing always?
