Please, please, please, consider that sin is sin and let’s drop this conversation. No one else answer. Sin is sin…don’t be decieved. We are under a bombardment to sin today. Our answers to sin are ETERNAL. I implore all souls somewhat tempted to even answer to only answer, " God alone is who is my Lord, to Him do I serve and I will not serve money or any other temptation to pull my from His Holiness." This is my last emplore to you.

Amen,
mlz

Amen -

Consider this…
Mt 5…
27 "You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

If the man who “looks lustfully at a woman has already committed adultery in his heart”, what of the one who looks greedily at that which does not belong to him?? Is he not equally guilty???

The 7th commandment of the Decalogue is - “You shall not steal.”
But note the 10th…“You shall not covet thy neighbors goods”.

Peace
James

That’s the same way the snake wanted Eve to “read the question” as well…In truth there is no “get away with it”…

Peace
James
AMEN!

:sad_yes::clapping:

Sin is sin is sin…

Money can’t buy your way into Heaven. But it can purchase you a ticket to Hell.

I just trademarked that so don’t get any ideas. 😉

Maybe im naive but I think the people answering yes are just saying, “I wouldn’t put it past me”. I said, jokingly, that I might if it was gemstones. I really don’t think anyone is planning to commit a mortal sin here. I appreciate everyone warning against it, but I think it was really just an icebreaker type question about what tempts you.

I understood the question as meaning there is no civil punishment, that is, there is no way you can get caught. I didn’t interpret the question as no divine punishment. I don’t wish to sound “holier than thou” but even without divine punishment, I wouldn’t steal the money, simply because it’s wrong. However, if the money were absolutely needed to save someone’s life, I might steal it in that situation only.
hi meltzer,

yes, no civil penalty

and you could always find a way to do good with it if you wanted.

No I don’t think you are being naive, but I don’t think this is about “planning” to commit a mortal sin so much as it is about being open to it.

Now on the one hand one could say, “well I’m just being honest”…and that is true and a good thing. It reveals a weakness that needs attention.

That said, I would hope that those who wish to claim the mantle of being Catholic, would be able to answer, honestly, that they would obey one of the most basic of rules. "Thou shalt not steal.
After all, the scenario is not complicated and there are no delicate or complex moral issues involved…It is a straight forward question - would you steal a million dollars???
EVERY Catholic should be able to answer this hypothetical question with the hypothetical but honest answer NO.

Understand, that such an answer does not preclude one failing if actually put to the test. After all, St Peter failed his declaration to Jesus by denying him three times. Yet his belief at the time was such that he DID, in all honesty, make the declaration.
Likewise with us - If we believe stealing is wrong then let us reinforce that belief with our answer…NO I would not steal the money…Period. Or - at the very least - say I am weak but I would hope that I could resist the temptation.

That’s just my view on it…

Peace
James

Crystal clear on that James. Peter’s denial after his saying he would never do such a thing is an apt example. I believe that now that we have the answer the case should be closed!

Isn’t it funny how after much talk about something just one addition can clear away the dross? I think so.

To those who said no, kudos to you! stay strong in your faith.

to those who said yes,

You have some soul searching to do. I think its time you pray and ask for guidance from the holy spirit.

Why would I want a million dollars? 🤷

If I didn’t earn it I wouldn’t want it.

when i think of then misery and worry i could have helped my family and friends through, i would would steal it in a minute.

This is foolishness. You see that you can help “family and friends” and relieve their “misery and worry” but you completely miss the “misery and worry” that you inflict on those from whom you steal.

Two Questions…and keep your answers simple - Yes or no…

If you had a million Dollars that you had “earned”, would you want someone stealing it from you?

Are you willing to accept the Divine condemnation for the mortal sin you have committed?

Peace
James

I would not. Reminds me of something I want to talk to my priest about though.

On another note, I question wether I would even accept any inheritence I may get, though it may be tempting if I end up with large student loans. I really do not want any corruption or greed that may come with money.

Ditto both points! Sometimes I ask my confessor very foolish questions, but I have gotten responses that have shaped my life. I’ll share one because I think it’s so important:

Me: Why doesn’t God answer my petitions? I know He hears me, but what if it’s true that all He ever does is says no and the best I can ever hope for is getting to Purgatory by the skin of my teeth?

Confessor: Isn’t that all that matters?

That was a “could’ve heard a pin drop” moment.

I would not trust the arrangement.

I would certainly fear bad karma. I’d fear being killed by the entity I stole the money from. It would bring way too much anxiety.

From Fiddler on the Roof:

Perchik: Money is a curse.

Tevye: May God strike me with it! And may I never recover!

😃

It would depend on who or what I’m stealing it from. If it’s like Ocean’s 11 then maybe. If it’s like someone’s entire livelihood then absolutely not.

No.

For one you’d spend your entire life trying to avoid detection, you’d be paranoid, concerned that someone is getting to close, you’d have trouble spending it, enjoying it, and who to trust? Then the money would be all gone.

Seems like a total waste of time and energy.

I recently learnt my neighbour stole half a million from clients, faked his own death, went on the run for several years then got caught after posting his profile on a gay sex website.

He shows no sorrow, no remorse, no concern for the friends and loved ones who thought he was dead. And the money is no where to be seen.

Why the heck would I want to do that to myself?
