If you could join an order, which one would you join

The Poor Clare Sisters hold a special place in my heart. I think their prayers and Adoration of Our Lord do more for the world than many realize.

I like the charter and mission of the Jesuits - “Finding God in all things.” I have been impresed my many Jesuit priests such as Fr. John B. Foley, Fr. Dan Schutte, Fr. Bob Dufford, Fr. Mitch Pacwa, and Fr. Robert Faricy.

Thank you for reviving this thread - love it! 🙂

I’ve been interested in this off and on for some time now, off an on, and love learning about all the different orders and organizations…

I have never felt that I had a vocation to the priesthood or religious life. Anyway, I’m married and the question is moot. But if I were not married and if I did decide to join an order, I think it would be the Benedictines. Notwithstanding that I was Jesuit educated and admired them greatly 'way back then, I think they have fallen from their once great position. I think the Benedictine mix of work and prayer has the greatest appeal to me. As a confirmed workaholic, that almost seems the best of all possible mixes. Besides, having been to a Benedictine monastery and having talked to some of them, I find that they often have a beer with their very generous meals. Hard to argue with a group like that.

I’m thinking about becoming a Passionist Oblate. If all goes well, I am going to make a retreat soon and will talk then.

I’m pondering 3rd order Franciscan or Carmelite, but I probably won’t do anything official for a few years until my baby is older. I sometimes wish I had been born a Catholic, I definitely would have liked to be a Poor Clare or Discalced Carmelite (Therese is my confirmation patron).

This is for lay people only 🙂

I know that some people may argue that God would choose the order for you, rather than you choose yourself; so, I ask this question in reference to which order you feel best fits your abilities and interests, under the assumption that God would naturally draw you to an order that fits the abilities He gave you.

Perhaps you can explain why you choose one order over others.

Sorry I couldn’t put down all the major orders. I understand that there are Marians, Augustinians, Passionists, Trappists, Basilians, etc., but I can’t fit them all on the poll. But please mention any of these other orders if you know that’s what you would be best in. Also, please **embolden **the name of the order.
If I weren’t happily married with three children, I’d seriously consider the CARMELITES. I love contemplative prayer and have always been fascinated with St. Therese of Lisieux and St. Edith Stein.

Carthusians. Solitude, whether in your cell or out in the countryside. I would see myself as a translator of languages, transcribing documents for the Church as my work. Realistically, it would be a demanding life to put it mildly, but oh so attractive. At the moment I tell myself that my hermitage cell is my apartment in the desert of Ohio, hundreds of miles away from the nearest family member.

Before I just found out about the Carthusians, I used to daydream that if I weren’t Catholic, what it would be like to run away and become Amish, and wasn’t it a shame that there could be no Catholic community like that nowadays. But don’t the Carthusians fit the bill nicely, and best of all are Catholic?
