In the US we’re not required to give up meat on Fridays, but we can do something else instead. What do you do in place of giving up meat? I have no idea what I’m supposed to do!

is there some food you must have every day, just can’t live without–try giving it up on Fridays. Excellent training for the will and self-discipline.

CCC 1438 The seasons and days of penance in the course of the liturgical year (Lent, and each Friday in memory of the death of the Lord) are intense moments of the Church’s penitential practice. **These times are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and fraternal sharing (charitable and missionary works). **

Usually, I attend mass or 1hr adoration, visiting the sick, etc. Sorry, can’t really remember now. :o

I’ve gone back to meatless Fridays, but there was a time when I was eating meat on Fridays. In lieu of giving up meat, I would pray all 20 decade of the Rosary instead of the day’s five.

Mass or adoration is more of a treat to me than a penance.

If for some reason I have to eat meat on Friday, I usually pray the Stations of the Cross.

I know what you mean! 😃 That’s because selfless love takes pleasure in selflessly loving! For the saints, doing penance (denying oneself for soorrow for sin and love of God) was always an act of selfless love. They always enjoyed doing penance because they knew it pleased their Beloved! 👍.

About a year ago my daughters and I went back to meatless Fridays. When we have to eat meat—for whatever reason—we will give up something that is very hard to go with out. Usually for the girls its the computer or tv. Or, even though it isnt a penance( well, maybe for them since they are young), we will say the Rosary or add some time of extra prayers for the day.

Give up meat on Wednesday. As a Catholic no one looks twice if you give up meat on Friday. It’s still sort of half-expected. Give it up on another day of the week when it would be more difficult.

If I happen to have meat as a leftover I eat it for practical purposes, and then that evening I say the Litany of the Precious Blood.

It has gotten to be a habit to say that Litany, and I like to say it even if I don’t eat meat on Friday.

Meatless Fridays would not be a sacrifice for me. I loved having fish and chips on Fridays, when I was growing up in Pre-Vatican II days.

Today, I do little things. At the office, some one usually brings in donuts or some pastry. I don’t have any. Or, I’ll give some other treat during the day.

I really wouldn’t know what to do either, so I just abstain all Fridays (except Solemnities), and leave it at that. KISS: Kep It Simple and Serene:twocents:

I try to remember to give up soda. We all know that it’s almost impossible for us teens to live without the stuff so it seemed the most logical thing for me to abstain from.🙂

Pope John Paul II encouraged abstaining from meat on Fridays as a way of fasting for an end to abortion, so our family is meatless on Friday.
