Do you think this is an indication that you are going to be “punished”, or do all people feel this way, regardless of their “goodness” or “badness.” I read about some saints feeling so happy to go stand before God - does that mean because they will be going straight to heaven and have nothing to feel bad about, whereas those who feel uneasy about standing before God know they are full of sin?

I believe it was St. John Vianney that feared hell, and yet he was one of the most holy and devout Saints of all time.

If anything, I believe it’s more typical for Saints agonize over their faults because they recognize their sinfulness before a perfect God. This is a gift. Likewise, we should recognize our own wretchedness. Without this gift, how will we ever allow God to finish the good work He has already started within us?

As a former Evangelical we use to say “conviction” not “condemnation.” There is a sense in which I believe this is true. The Holy Spirit moves in us in such ways because there will be a final and particular judgement on our lives. Our Lord wants us to become holy as He is holy. Fear of the Lord (and our sinfulness) is a grace when properly understood and lived out.

In His Peace,

JB

I think it has to do with trust and love of God. If you Love and Trust God with all your heart and soul then you have nothing to fear.

when my time comes to die I might get butterflies in my tummy and feel a little nervous with excitement. I can’t imagine what it would feel like to be seconds away from being able to say “I LOVE YOU” to His face! To His glorious perfect Face. And then say it again and again forever. :heaven:
Kinda makes me wish I could die right now 😊

Don’t be scared of God, He loves You so much! More than you can ever imagine.

I think that if your on your deathbed and start thinking to yourself about all you have done, you will be inviting the devil to come and launch his final assault - to make you despair. Just pray “God, I love You, I trust You” as you pass beyond the mortal veil. And he will Love you and not fail You 🙂

Hmmm…

I think a person who does not feel queasy and scared at the thought of standing before God has a lot more to worry about than someone who does.

The reason?

Pride.

If you feel queasy and scared, it is an acknowledgement that you are a sinner who needs, with God’s help, to refrain from sin and do more as far as works of charity. This is a good thing. It can and should inspire you to work at being a better Christain.

If you’re not scared and queasy, then you are probably complacent, and not striving to rid your life of sin, not doing what you can to help the needy, etc.

I’ll stop being scared and queasy when St. Peter waves me through the pearly gates.🙂

I have my speech all planned out when I meet God, and here it is: “MERCY!” I don’t know what else to say.🤷

I stand before God daily in the Living Prayer of my life in Christ Jesus. I am not afraid to do this, therefore why would I be afraid to go before God at the end of my life?

I have given everything back to God daily in the offering of my Living Prayer and so when I go before God at the end of my life I will have nothing to offer Him. I will stand there, naked, empty handed with nothing retained for my ‘self’ because everything was given back to God during my earthly life.

I have no case to plead, I am sinner and I have nothing to withstand the Goodness and Greatness of God.

I will go to Him with love and cling to His chest where I have often snuggled close to His Sacred Heart these years and hid myself there in Him. I will whisper to His heart without words but in groans of love as I have often done this side of life ‘Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy’. I will not fear His Sacred Heart of Love even though I know His Greatness and my littleness, I will not fear His Goodness even though I know my sin because He has covered me in His Precious Blood and I have known His Absolution.

I will die of this Living Prayer and I will be a little bloodless martyr of prayer and my soul will be glad for it and the Goodness God has done for my poor soul by giving me a little piece of His Cross so that I may return it back to Him.

I am going home when I die, I wait with joy, everyday, to go home.

I am not afraid, you should not be afraid. You will go home, don’t be afraid.

Pray, persevere in prayer and don’t worry.🙂

I definitely feel nervous and scared at the thought of standing before God. Now these feelings are definitely not from Him, as I know He is a Loving God - I am just so scared of being separated from Him and scared at the thought of disappointing Him. My biggest fear is having Him turn away from me when He sees me - and so I want to do everything I can in this lifetime to please Him and do His Will.

Years ago, I was watching Mother Angelica on Tv and she was talking about this very subject/ She said something to the effect of it’s very important to remember that once we are standing before Him for our final judgement, it’s not going to be like an earthly court session - we are not going to have anyone to defend us, we are going to have to acknowledge and take responsibility for every wrong we have done. As I said, I heard her say this years ago, so I may not be para-phrasing her correctly, but I hope you know what I mean.

I pray that when the time does come, I will be given the opportunity to give Him a big hug and that He will hold me close to His Sacred Heart.

I see this thread and think how we stand before God and bow at every Mass, though He is hidden. I tend to think how I would feel when He reveals Himself to me instead. I have had a taste of this and felt only love and compassion. My soul reacted beforehand that was purgative and painful to it, like a sponge being squeezed free of water, but to retain it’s shape, no harm done. And the revelation wiped away that soulful pain to where I forgot about it completely and was in wonder. But this life on earth is the hour of mercy which was shown to me. I don’t know how I can stand at the full revelation of God and my own sins that have offended Him being revealed to their true nature, but can only trust in mediation of mercy and love which is the Lord Himself. Tim

I feel most queasy if I consider standing before God on Judgement Day and there is that eternal conflict between how I feel and what my Faith tells me. I dont dwell on this though, I’ll have to cross the bridge at the time; meanwhile God has gifted me life and its all about living the life…Barb:)

The thought of seeing God face to face makes me nervous to think about it (that would be such a grace!) I’m not nervous because of my sins but because we really don’t know what to expect on that day until it happens. I hope it will be the happiest day of my life. So I’ll do my best to follow Jesus while I am stilling living on Earth and look forward to His return.
