If you had to choose a different religion

Well, I guess NC’s can respond in that if the Catholic church disappeared, they’d continue to attend the church they are already attending 🙂

Ironically, that is why most NC’s are attending the church they are attending. But that is off topic. 🤔

First, this is just a thought I randomly had. I have no desire to leave the Catholic Church or anything.

If an extreme event occurred and the Catholic Church disappeared, what religion would you become, if any?

Anglican/Episcopal? Lutheran? Eastern Orthodox?

I think I would be drawn to the unprogrammed Quakers. They have some funky beliefs, but I admire their values.
In response to the title of the thread:
I have regularly and always said that I would return to the Catholic Chruch.
Recently, I decided that I would align myself with the SSPX, but I would still consider Pope Francis the Pope (which is part of the SSPX structure anyway).

In response to some of the extra comments, I have no idea how the absence of the Catholic Church would effect historic Christianity. Would Eastern Orthodox exist? It would all depend upon how the eradication of Catholicism was accomplished in your theoretical. Would Christ be eradicated? Would we still have a Bible? Would we have any Old Testament (assuming Catholicism is the fulfillment of Judaism)?

But, if none of the things that I believe happened in the 19th century had actually happened, I would be Catholic (potentially a revert from a dozen years ago and a brief sojourn in the wilderness, but I am confident, a Catholic).

Charity, TOm

This! If I were the last Catholic and in a Muslim country, I’d willingly go to martyrdom for Jesus.

Oh sorry, I didn’t know exactly what category to post this random thought in. The question can certainly be expanded to anyone though.

Hey there, so I totally get you. If anyone would understand what you are talking about , it would be me. So perhaps I should explain a tad bit more about why that would be and how I feel.

First of all my grandmother who was Italian was first cousins to one of the Popes and that is all I am going to say on that one. So my grandmothers family originated from the Rome area, where her and the Popes relation was from .

Secondly I am Italian on my paternal side and Spanish on my maternal side. That said, my Spanish side faced problems with the RC Church in Southern Spain in the late 1890s’s up till about 1911. There was many problems with the church and monies and taxes and the list goes on. About 90 % of my family on the Spanish side converted to being Protestants when they came to America because of this very issue.

Thirdly regarding Orthodox and why I found it funny. You see I have had plenty of conversations with friends that are Greek Orthodox, Greek Orthodox priest and some other Orthodox like Russian and Ethiopian. They all like to show themselves as the true church and that the RC Church is not and it actually goes against scripture. I cannot tell you the countless times I have heard this from them. So In fact I kicked out of my house a woman that was Orthodox because she kept trashing the Roman Catholic Church…and I am a Protestant. But I told her, I have family that are RC and my family was RC and I will not have you talk bad about them or their religion anymore.

If you think I am wrong, here is a small article from the Orthodox regarding the RC church

I’ve met enough Orthodox to know you aren’t wrong and a lot of them don’t like us Catholics and that’s putting it nicely.

However, they are still the only non-Catholic faith with apostolic succession, valid sacraments and the Vatican telling us we can go to their liturgy for Sunday if there’s no Catholic liturgy available.

So let’s just hope the Catholic Church doesn’t just disappear any time soon, because then I might end up as a “Hidden Christian” after the Orthodox church kicks me out. Actually, I kind of liked the response that said when there is no more Catholic Church then the world will be at an end anyway.

Being Jewish, I expect I that pretending to accept Islam would be the easiest but Sikhism might be more interesting.
Sikhism for me. Almost every Sikh I’ve met has been polite, friendly, hard working and happy. They are an excellent advertisement for their religion.

Eastern Orthodox but if it had to be a non-Christian religion I would have to say I have always been a bit drawn to the simplicity of Islam with the cowardly side of my human nature somewhat enticed by the fact they seem to be confident and doing well. Although i am not sure in reality that i could ever get round their Jesus stories (ie bringing clay birds to life and talking from the cradle) being so funky and obviously drawn from dubious sources . Maybe I’d do a Karen Armstrong and simply describe myself as a freelance monotheist.

Christianity is the religion I belong to. I am a member of the Church Jesus is the Founder of.

Well, considering that my favorite Saint is Drew Brees, if the Catholic Church no longer existed, my religion would be football.

What about Zoroastrianism?

I’d imagine Judaism to Zoroastrian would be an easier switch than Jew to Sikh.

There’s quite a bit of evidence that Zoroastrianism (the religion of the Medo-Persian Empires) had a significant influence on Judaism.

In fact, in the Bible in Ezra 1:2, it is thought that the reference to “the God of heaven” - which is a title of the God of Zoroastrianism, Ahura Mazda - may be an example of the God of the Jews and Ahura Mazda being viewed as one and the same Deity.

One of my wife and my guilty pleasure! That show will not end well. In fact I think the murder if one of the sisters mother was a direct result of her leaving. I’m acquainted with some FLDS folk. To me it’s more of a political movement than a religious one.
