Has anyone purchased this bible? What do you like or dislike about it from a quality and usability standpoint? Is it bulky? I read that the text size is 12 point (seems big) and photographically reproduced. This sounds like it might make for less than high quality printing. What do you think of the print quality and paper quality? I’ve seen Loreto’s smaller D-R and wasn’t that impressed with either one in that edition.

“Seems big” :rotfl:
You’re obviously younger than 40 years old! 😃

I wish! But I can read 12 pt type without my reading glasses and without holding it at arm’s length! 😃 At nearly two thousand 8.5 x 11 pages, this sounds like a book made bigger than it needed to be due to type size.

I understand. I just couldn’t resist, because, while I’ve been nearsighted most of my life (have difficulty seeing things far away), a couple of years ago I suddenly (or so it seemed) discovered that I can’t read fine print anymore.

I have the paperback Haydock, and it is 2 LARGE volumes, but the commentary is in such small print that I have to squint at times to read it (but it’s GOOD commentary !! ).

I’m 46 and my eyes “ain’t” what they used to be !!

I have the hardcover Geo Haydock. The Scripture text is 12 point, but the notes are much smaller. It’s a two volume set - OT (which is of course quite a bit thicker) and NT. It’s about the size of an encyclopedia (11 1/2" x 8 1/2"). I use it as a reference when I want to check out different commentaries. Too big to use just for reading Scripture - at least for me. I prefer a regular size bible for that.

Did you know you can get the Geo. Haydock commentary online.

The NT is complete, but the OT isn’t completed yet. (About 44% is done.) Hopefully they’ll get it all online soon.

Nita-
I’m confused. I read this from the description at Loreto Publications:
Previous editions were in two softcover volumes. This edition is one hard cover volume on fine Bible paper with a gold-leaf image on the burgundy leather cover along with a satin ribbon marker. Size is 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches.

You have two hardcover volumes?

They have been selling the Haydock in 2 volumes. It’s now available in one volume. I personally would prefer the one volume myself but I’m going to wait and see what others think of it first. Plus, I’d have to save up the money. 🙂

Yes. One volume is the OT and the second is the NT. I got it quite a few years ago.

Nita,
The new one volume hardcover contains both the Old Testament AND the New Testament, and the older Haydock was in two volumes and they are not hardcover. The one volume also has a ribbon bookmark and the two volume doesn’t. I bought the older 2 volumes too, and I’m very interested in the single volume.

Hi Annie,

I assure you, my two volumes are hardcover - red. It was (maybe still is) published by Catholic Treasures, 626 Montana St., Monrovia, CA 91016. Can’t remember what I paid for them - or when I got them. Almost positive it was within the last 15 years.

Ok…Still waiting to here from someone who owns the new one-volume hardcover Haydock and can address my original questions about quality. (Channeling Ben Stein in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) Anyone…anyone…? 😃

Nita,
That is very interesting about the two volume Haydock in Leather too. Wish I would have known and I would have gotten mine in Leather. I think the one volume mentioned here, is the new Douay Rheims Haydock Bible. It is $125.00 and it is by Loreto Publications.

I have the same 2-vol set in paperback. I agree it’s kinda hard to read the footnotes.

I have them both…

I had bought the 2-vol soft cover set about one year ago… but it seems that I always needed both in a bible study because of the cross referencing of verses.

The commentary is half the page on most pages, and yes it is harder to read in the smaller font size .

The Hard Cover edition was just released this past month after about a one year wait. It is the exact same page layout as the soft cover, with just a bit thinner page that is more than adequate. It is an impressive book for sure.

The good news was that those (like me:D ) who had ordered and paid for them back when the idea was to have a 3-vol hard cover set, have been waiting for quite a while. There was not a great interest in the 30vol set. So they published in a single vol (which cut the costs below the original $150.

And then they sent everyone who had paid and waited two books for each one they had ordered… !!! Imagine my suprise when I got this heavy box with two books and they were both mine.!!

Anyway … it is extremely nice !! and I am pleased.

Catholic Treasures has also lowered the price because of the reduced production cost.

Awesome that you have 2 of the one volume, MrS! Is the print of the commentaries on the bottom in the new one, as small as the print in the older soft cover, which I have?

it is the exact same page as the 2 vol soft cover I purchased last year.

If there is any difference it might be that the text in the new hard cover is just a tiny bit blacker… thus more contrast with the white page.
