If you saw President Barack Obama, would you shake hands with him?

I’m going to be completely honest and say that the President is personally inspiring to me for reasons that are not necessarily relevant to this thread. A dilemma then popped into my head and has been bugging me for many days: Would I shake hands with President Barack Obama, given the fact that he supports abortion?

On the one hand, I think absolutely. I mean, it’s not everyday you get to meet the U.S. President. But on the other hand, I thought: This man is technically presiding over the deaths of the unborn. People in the future may/will look at abortion in the same way we today look at slavery. Do I want to be photographed with a leader who supports abortion?

Would you shake hands with the President? Please note that I’m not putting him down or insulting him in any way. He is actually one of my inspirations after watching a couple of his life stories. It’s just something that’s been bothering me for a while. I’m also not American, just to note.

Shaking hands is a greeting… not an endorsement. I’d shake hands with him …sure.

I can tell you his hands are softer than any woman’s. I didn’t talk to him or anything, he was just moving down the line shaking hands, for me to pull my hand back would have been rude. I don’t like the man, but I’ve shaken the hands of a lot worse people who have done a lot worse things.

If Obama came up to me and extended his hand then yes because if I didn’t it would be disrespectful.

If Obama was walking by extending his hand to whoever wanted to shake it then no and this is because if I make the effort to try and shake his hand it makes me look like a fan of his which I am not.
 
Yes, I WOULD. He is the current leader of our country and even if I don’t agree with him and his policies, he is still our president and deserves some BASIC respect.

How is he technically “presiding” over the deaths of the unborn? Abortion laws were in effect before he took office. He does not have that much control over the abortion issue . The US SUPREME COURT has more power over it than President Obama.

Of course. Shaking hands is a basic courtesy. Besides, he is the president of my country whether I voted for him or not.
 
Yes, only as a matter of courtesy. I may not like his ideals, the job he is doing nor where he is taking our country but he is still our “elected president” and deserves the respect of the position he holds. May God bless him.
 
Yes, even though I disagree with almost everything he has done, he is still my president and I love my country dearly.
 
Just out of curiosity, how have previous U.S. presidents shown their ant-, or lack of pro, abortion credentials?

Good question. Actually, I’m not so sure as I’m not from the U.S. But I watched a couple of Obama’s earlier debates (especially in his run against Alan Keyes) and he seemed pretty vociferous about a fetus being a non-human being.

What do you mean? Are you asking how many presidents publicly announce their view on abortion or how many actually do anything about it?

No, I would not. And you are not the first person to swoon over eloquent oratory.

Absolutely I would, with no reservations whatsoever.

If he wrote me a letter of congratulations for something, I might just hang it on my wall. And I consider him a political enemy. I was actually voted in elections as Republican precinct committee member, endorsed by the conservative pro-life faction of the Republican Party in Kansas that goes by the name KRA (Kansas Republican Assembly). That is as opposed to the other faction, the GOP Club, which is liberal (they call themselves “moderate”). Kansas is a Republican state, so there is much power in the party which draws both sides to wear the label because in many districts liberals cannot get elected under the Democrat label.

I can’t even remember if I voted against him, because as much as I disliked his politics and distrusted his word, I thought McCain was an amazingly pompous jerk who had no clue how to have a meaningful discussion on anything and even though he said some things I like I couldn’t trust him from one minute to the next. I think Obama has done some very destructive things, but OTOH he has voiced some things I never really knew enough to appreciate until I lost my lucrative engineering career to mental disability and wallowed with the poor, trying to raise six kids on welfare and food stamps and later disability, well after I drained the IRA’s and 401(k) plans. Maybe he’s exploiting the poor, but at least he’s trying to raise public awareness of some issues that I scoffed at until 10 years ago.

But yes, if I met him I would shake his hand.

A friend of my wife who stood up at our wedding, the late Oda Von Holck, was a baroness from Denmark. She loved to tell stories, and said she had once had dinner with Hitler at the table. We asked her what it was like, and what he was like. She said she really didn’t know what he was like because in a political setting everybody uses manners, and don’t get into personal conflict that way. (Oda actually helped convince me how much of a treasure my wife was, and was thereby instrumental in my decision to marry St. Julie.)
