If you simply 'don't like someone,' is it ...wrong?

I get along with most people–I’m relatively laid back, but there are some personalities that just rub me the wrong way. I still hold them in my prayers…want good things for them, but just don’t like being around them. People who brag a lot, I tend to shy away from…or overtalk others, and hog conversations, I also tend to shy away from. I try to see the good…try to see Jesus in everyone, so I do not ‘hate’ anyone, really. But, there are just some people that I’d rather not hang out with.

Can we love our “neighbors,” without liking them?:o

An excellent answer was given to our high school Latin class a while ago by our teacher, Sister Thomas Aquinas, who had all of the wisdom of the saint whose name she took. I can’t recall the occasion, but it was probably after handing back a pop quiz where the class didn’t do so well and she decided to count it. She told us “You have to love me. You do not have to like me.”

I’ll add something (possibly a little off the topic, but related) I use as a way to deal in my own conscience with forgiving people who I don’t like because they’ve wronged me in the past - “God says that if you bring your car to a mechanic to have it repaired, and he messes it up and still charges you a bundle, you still have to forgive them and love him. I fully agree, and add that however, you don’t have to bring your car back to him!”

I believe that if there is someone you truly do not like, you can and maybe even should avoid the person unless you have to deal with him(her) - such as a co-worker or (n some cases) a neighbor. Then a simple “hi” and exchange of any business without any socilaization such as “How’s the family” should be observed. Try to remain polite and courteous.

I also observe a custom that I started a few years ago. As part of my night prayers, every Saturday night I say a decade of the rosary “for the spiritual and temporal well-being of those with whom I have not gotten along or who have not gotten along with me.” In my case, it’s a short list, but it does exist.

Hope this helps.

I think the way you describe it, yes, you CAN love somebody without “liking” them.
“Liking” meaning getting along with, enjoying each other’s company, etc.

I try to do what you do too, I pray for people if I feel angry at somebody (even just somebody blocking my way on the sidewalk sometimes). I remember lighting a candle and saying a prayer for a guy who had stolen my wallet. I think that is a good way to go to deal with our feelings of antipathy. The feeligns themselves, in my opinion, are natural, because we are only human.

What I also try to remember is that I do not know the other person’s whole story, and maybe if I did I would understand exactly why they are the way they are. For now though sometimes we just have to accept and pray and remember that God’s love is in all of us and if we don’t see it at this moment maybe some day we will.

Just the fact that you TRY to get along with everybody… shows of your good intentions.🙂
I wish more people thought that way.

I appreciate your post…It’s not easy…but Jesus said it wouldn’t be easy to follow Him. I wish we could like everyone…but then again…there could very well be people who dislike us. Nah. not possible…haha j/k;)

I’m not sure even Our Lord “liked” everyone. How much “like” was he displaying when He cleansed the Temple? How much “like” was he showing when refering to the generation of vipers? Or the Romans who tortured aHim at the pillar, or taunted Him with the crown of thorns?

Obviously, He loved all of us enough to die for our sins. I’m just not sold on the idea that he LIKED them all.

yeah, very true.:o

Some people make it hard to like them!

To love someone is to want the very best for them, which is heaven. That doesn’t mean that you have to pretend they are nice to be around before they get there! 😉

I would imagine that we will like and love everyone…in Heaven.❤️

Makes you wish for it even more, doesn’t it? All our baggage will be gone, only Christ shining through. Aaahhh! :getholy:
