If you were becoming a religious and had to pick a new name, what would you choose?

(Br.) Elijah, because although I value silence, peace, and solitude, I am always looking for God in the miracles when I should be listening for the gentle breeze.

Given the liveliness of a cenobitic monastery, the eremitic way interests me much more. It is about stillness, as well as a perpetual movement to God. It is about solitude, yet not an isolation from humanity, for there is always the fellow hermit in the nearby laura and the far-away brother and sister who need prayers. Elijah knew what drought, famine, poverty, and anguish were. He was real and realistic. Full of zeal for the Lord, God of hosts.

Also, Iā€™ve always loved ravens. :o
 
In our Community of Franciscan Sisters of Dillingen, we take ā€œMaryā€ or ā€œMarieā€ as part of our religious name. The superiors decide but we can offer three suggestions of what we would like or it may happen that we are allowed to keep our baptismal name. This is what happened in my case.

I would choose two names that my patron saint is called by- she who is St. Nina (also named St. Ninny, St. Nuno, St. Nino, and St. Christiana.) For my confirmation name I chose ā€œNina Christianaā€ and that probably would be my religious name as well.

My husband and I are making our Profession to OFS on June 24th. He has a special devotion to St. Michael the Archangel. Our Fraternity is very Marian and we all make a Consecration to Mary, so he is taking the name Brother Michael Mary!

I am taking the name Sister Agnes Maria. ā€¦ The Agnes is for St. Agnes of Assisi, sister of St. Clare. I love her plus I was a close friend of a Franciscan Sister whose name was Agnes. So my choice is to honor both Agnesā€™ in my life! I chose Maria instead of Mary simply because it was more Italian!

Just out curiousity, are your husband and you both entering religious life? I didnā€™t know this existed now a days within the catholic church? I hope you donā€™t find me rude but I am just very curious about this.

I think sheā€™s talking about a secular order. These are communities of laypeople who try to live out a particular orderā€™s charism in daily life.

I would take the name Br. Pius, after my confirmation Saint: St. Pius X.
 
Either Augustine, obviously, or Dysmas or both, perhaps with Mary as a middle name.

Thatā€™s great to know! The Franciscansā€¦ interesting. Iā€™m discerning and wondering if this is a signal grace from God about my vocation. There are no coincidences with the power of the Rosary! Congratulations and I pray the Lord will help you in living out your charism fruitfully.
 
If I had to pick a name, I would pick the one apostle that I could relate to the most and who gives me hope. Paul. Just look at what his life was like before he became Paul, and look at what God was able to do with him. It gives me hope and courage to know that God can shape any of our lives as long as we allow Him.

I would think you would look among names of people you want to emulate, and then among those look for one you can emulate in some degree because your particular talents are suited to the task.
 
Agnes Therese

Agnes for my confirmation patron St. Agnes of Rome. Therese for St. Therese of the child Jesus and St. Teresa of Avila, my Carmelite role models. I adopted, itā€™s actually more like she adopted me, St. Therese as my second patron saint.

It would seem that my lifeā€™s vocation looks like it will be more similar to my patroness Agnes in consecrated virginity but my heart is Carmelite and no matter wherever I end up in life I will be a carmelite In some way, like in a third order community. I am still discerning my vocation though. It will either be marriage or consecrated virginity.

A little late to the thread, but Iā€™ve honestly always wanted to take the name ā€œBr. Simeon of the Child Jesusā€.
