I would join the church of “Cash rules everything around me cream. Get the money. Dollar Dollar bills y’all” 😃

Oh really.

Do you know nobody owns anything of the Catholic Church? It belongs to God.
What you see is the glory given to God for His Church.

if i wasn’t married, a parent, working, catholic…

40 yrs ago - sex and drugs and rock’n’roll is all i’ll ever need…
30 yrs ago - i’d probably be dead…
(if at first you don’t succeed… drink some beer and smoke some weed…)
20 yrs ago - living in a van down by the river…
10 yrs ago - chasing skirts…
today - a priest…

what a long strange trip it’s been…

Interesting question! I don’t know. There are a lot of similarities between Pure Land Buddhism and Christianity, so I’d probably at least think about it.

But, I’d probably just try to live my life as well as I could with values derived from Western philosophy, I suppose.

Hmm. The question is interesting, though, because so much of my morality and how I see the world is a result of my belief in Christ.

Mormon or Muslim or Jewish

because:

The Catholic Church is the true Church. For it NOT to be true, then one of three things would have to be true:

Jesus was not the Messiah…then I would be Jewish

Jesus was a prophet, but not the Son of God…then I would, still believing in God, consider Muslim

Jesus was weak and could not keep His Church together…then I would be LDS

I would remain practicing the same faith I practice now…“Quaker” is a convienient label…but Truth doesn’t require one.

If I weren’t a Christian?

I’d probably be what I was before returning to the Christian fold: a Zen/Tao/Vedanta Eastern syncretist.

If I weren’t an Episcopalian or ELCA Lutheran? And I would leave if they abandoned creedal orthodoxy, so that’s entirely possible.

Well, I was Pentecostal (AoG) before, but I don’t want to go back to the conservative evangelical side at all. And I want to stay liturgical. So… Old Catholic (Utrecht) would be first choice, though they have hardly any US presence. UMC or PCUSA maybe. Continuing Anglican or LCMS Lutheran could work, but both are more conservative than I’d prefer. And Roman Catholic would be an option, but not a comfortable one, I disagree with too much, even more than with conservative Anglicans and Lutherans…

The LCMS would defiantly show strong law, but we’d also love you and cherish you and keep pointing to the gospel. We are quite strict, but that has a interesting component - that one knows that the love and the gospel we share are truly from the heart and not just a method.

To answer the OP: I’d go back to being agnostic, but I’m afraid that God would keep leading me back to the church with me kicking and whimpering. As he has done so many times before.

I am a very reluctant Christian, but it’s my home and I rejoice in it.

Welp… if TEC and ELCA abandoned creedal orthodoxy, forcing me to leave, I’m sure I wouldn’t be the only one, and LCMS would be a likely port of refuge for many. But though I’m generally on the same page as LCMS theologically, there are a few things that’d be really hard for me to swallow: 1) male only clergy, 2) closed communion and 3) 6 literal 24hr. day creation.

If, God forbid, you suddenly lost your faith in your current religion, what religous group or sect do you think you would join?

For me I think that if I lost my faith as a Catholic I would either become Eastern Orthodox or Zarathrusti. What are your thoughts?
Can’t even think that the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob and son of David my Lord and God Jesus Christ and His Church would ever abandon me.

That said if I left I’ll likely join the church of me, myself and I.😛

However since my family history goes back to 16th century and Hinduism conversion to Catholic maybe revert to same. 🤷

It is not God that abandons us, it is us (humans) that abandon God. We get caught up in earthly things and we doubt, leading us from God 🙂

Had lapsed a bit for a few years during my younger days. And while in that state, strangely Catholicism is still the faith of choice for me if I was to be more religious; others just simply did not come into the equation. None Christian religions were simply not right for me, and other Christian denominations, well, if one wants to be a Christian, why not be in an original one? So, sorry, your question does not arise for me, even a hypothetical one at that.;)🙂

6 literal 24hr. day creation.
As a trained physicist, this used to drive me nuts until I realised it was just a failure of imagniation on my part - God created the universe in six creative acts. Each act spaned a day of His time.

The effects of those acts didn’t nesessarly take only a singular day of our time.

What’s strinking to me is how the story of Genesis reflects what we understand about the Big Bang - Light (energy) being created first. If Genesis were just a quaint desert story, you would think the observers (man) would be created first and then the means of sight.

(sorry to derail the thread)

What is Zarathrusti?
It is the Persian style pronunciation of Zoroastrian. Zoroastrianism is a very beautiful, internally consistent, and loving religion. I truly believe that Zarathustra or Zoroaster was a prophet sent by God to the Gentiles of Persia.

If there were no Lutheran church, I would be Roman Catholic. It’s the most familiar to me. I would still be sitting at the foot of the cross, with my eyes on Christ.
