what I think would be a sin, is to try to pay your way out of having to help others on that daily basis, and I could be wrong, but that’s what your question sounds like you’d be trying to do.

Yes that’s partly what I meant, but also would keeping *any *of the money be justified. In other words just because you’ve given away 8 million of it doesn’t neccessarily justify keeping 2 million etc.

Aside from that, what if you’ve earnt a lot money from your own business or saving and investing your wage. Do we ‘earn’ the right to relax? to keep a certain amount for ourselves (more than what we need to survive or expand the business etc). Do we ‘earn’ the right to holidays, a nice car , a big TV, time off just to goof around…

If by, “Do we ‘earn’ the right to relax?”, you mean, “I’ve given all this money away, so I should be done with my duty and not have to do anything else for anyone else”, the answer is “No”. I continue to believe that we are required to do what we can do for God everyday, regardless of what we’ve done before. Remember, sloth is a sin. But, I don’t think that doesn’t mean we can’t have a nice car, take our family away for a holiday, or just goof off. I guess I kind of think of our duty to God as being on-call, 24/7.

If you’re on that holiday, you’ve taken the family to Europe or the beach, and there is someone there who needs help you can provide, I think you are required to provide that help. That being said, I think giving all of your money away could be sinful as well, “IF” you would be a good steward of that money. Let me explain: If I had millions, and I gave it all away, it could help many people. If I invested that millions properly, it could make millions more, and help even more people for many more years.

Remember the story of the wealthy man that gave money to three servents, two of them used the money and returned even more to him, but the third buried the money he was given and was admonished as being lazy?

Hah, all these replies of how much “I” would give to the Church, charity, etc. etc. I have know many people (including myself) who have said the exact same thing. “Oh, if I could only win the lottery I will make such and such addition to this church, I will set up trusts to give money to the poor, I will live with the basics only. I would not buy a multi-million dollar house, etc. etc.” I felt some years back telling our Lord the same thing. I felt He telling me…
“Oh,sure, sure,” Really I was so concentrating on what I would do with the millions that I found myself living in a fantasy. I suddenly woke up and stopped playing. I would rather trust in the Lord for what I need, because if I had millions I would put all my trust in the almighty dollar. Remember the story about the man who was so wealthy and was going to tear down the bins and build larger one and would say to self that he had no more worries. Hah… one would be swamped with relatives coming out of the wall DEMANDING that I be “Christian” and give them some… No thanks…

I would re-open the Catholic school at our parish! (plus donate a chunk to Catholic charities and keep some for my family).
The school’s been only used for parish events (catechism, KofC, bible study, etc) for the last 30 years.
Maybe then my job would be teaching or administrating there but also being independently wealthy.
That means travel and fun and seeing God’s great work in the wonders and beauty of the Earth and being with my family in the summer, and working for the Church and helping educate the children of the community during the school year!

I think it’s great that you trust the Lord to provide for your needs, but what a sad, dim view you’ve limited yourself to. I envision what I could do for Him with that kind of money.

We all must trust the Lord to provide for our needs. Great for you! I prefer to think of how many people I could help with that kind of money. I’ve had enough money before to know that it can’t buy you happiness, but I’m ashamed to say that I wasn’t a very good steward of that money for God either. I guess I believe that I’ve grown enough to realize that God expects more of me and to do for Him, so if I did win a lottery I would be the steward I wasn’t in my past. So I will serve the Lord as best I can with what I have.

Not sure I’d give to these specific things, but that seems like about the right breakdown.

Of the 4 mil, I’d invest half in something fairly safe. With the other…I’d buy me a Tesla Roadster and have it painted like the General Lee, to start with.

The first thing I’d do is sell my 06 Civic Si and get me a Nissan 350Z and a Mazda RX-8, both roadster editions.
