I was actually hoping for some good philisophical reasoning, but instead I found someone who was bitter or angry and was lashing out at God. The so called “arguments” seemed to either demonstrate an extremely lacking comprehension of Christianity, or to be complaints about religious ideas. Personally, I could come up with better reasons not to believe in God. Bring me dispassionate atheist argument and I will look more closely at it, but as for the authors listed, and this series of posts I read…they were simply pitiful. I suggest several Psalms for anyone with this “anti-God” mindset. Of course, they must be prayed with openness.

PSALM 95:7-11
For this is our God, whose people we are, God’s well-tended flock. Oh, that today you would hear his voice: Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on the day of Massah in the desert. There your ancestors tested me; they tried me though they had seen my works. Forty years I loathed that generation; I said: “This people’s heart goes astray; they do not know my ways.” Therefore I swore in my anger: “They shall never enter my rest.”
PSALM 14:
For the leader. Of David. Fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” Their deeds are loathsome and corrupt; not one does what is right. The LORD looks down from heaven upon the human race, To see if even one is wise, if even one seeks God. All have gone astray; all alike are perverse. Not one does what is right, not even one. Will these evildoers never learn? They devour my people as they devour bread; they do not call upon the LORD. They have good reason, then, to fear; God is with the company of the just. They would crush the hopes of the poor, but the poor have the LORD as their refuge. Oh, that from Zion might come the deliverance of Israel, That Jacob may rejoice, and Israel be glad when the LORD restores his people!
PSALM 42: 3-6
My being thirsts for God, the living God. When can I go and see the face of God? My tears have been my food day and night, as they ask daily,“Where is your God?” Those times I recall as I pour out my soul, When I went in procession with the crowd, I went with them to the house of God, Amid loud cries of thanksgiving, with the multitude keeping festival. Why are you downcast, my soul; why do you groan within me? Wait for God, whom I shall praise again, my savior and my God.

If your so sure that God exists then you’ll read all of my three blogs about religion because if he exists then how can someone prove that he doesn’t? What is there to be afraid of? Words? The truth? Its your choice. you can’t keep running away from the arguements and expect everyone to always mindlessly follow you. Its time to have everything explained the way it should be.
1 Corinthians Chapter 13:
For we know partially and we prophesy partially, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away… At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known.

And

John Chapter 3
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

God loves you.

You’ll know the way your enemy thinks and maybe it could change your life. What is there to be afraid of? Words? The truth? Its your choice. Christopher Hitchens said his book called “God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything” is flying off the shelves of bible belt book stores on a “know your enemy basis,” and Michael Novak from The National Review said that you guys need to take what Hitchens, Dawkins, Harris, and others like me say seriuosly * because you can’t keep running away from the arguements and expect everyone to always mindlessly follow you. Its time to have everything explained the way it should be.*

Make sure you read them in order of course since they aren’t because I turned two blogs into three and you can’t change their order. (emphasis mine)

By my count, an 87 word run-on sentence with 2 spelling and untold grammatical errors. Teach me, rabbi.

All the proof I need of God’s existence and sense of humor is that your URL contains the message “Rest in Peace, Kurt Cobain and Randy Rhoads”.

If God doesn’t exist, why would you even bother with such a message?

I really don’t understand your position. You seem angry that Christians believe in God. So, in your anger you try to preach to us Christians that God does not exist. Hmm. So, in other words you want to preach to us mindless people YOUR beliefs. And we should listen to you because you are…wait a minute…who are you again?

If something could do this he would
have to be complicated beyond
belief or possibility.
Aha! You’ve discovered something that Christians have known for 2,000 years! We’re back to that ‘Mystery’ thing. Christians do not believe God can be fully comprehended or understood. Just what makes something “beyond belief”?
Actually, God is the most simple being that exists, since for him, being and essense are the same. See for instance Aquinas: The Simplicity of God
Now what sounds more
likely and more sane? God evolved
or humans and all living things evolved?
The question of evolution doesn’t make sense, since a perfectly simple being cannot have evolved from something else. Let me rephrase your question:

Which is more likely to exist of it’s own accord: A perfectly simple being or a rather complex being?
There is no way God appeared
out of nowhere and how can a
thing that is so complex and
powerful as God evolve from
something else? The chances of
this are zero…
You’re getting there, you’ve almost made your own logical argument for God…
He sure did 😁

With God being completely simple, he is the one that is most likely to exist by his own accord. Actually, by the logics of Occam’s razor, God is the best explaination of the universe…
The truth is that all the matter in
the universe came from the explosion
called the big bang
HOW did matter come into existence?

If your so sure God doesn’t exist then you won’t be afraid to read all the posts, threads and article on this site as well as the bible and the Catechism and the early Church Fathers, and still come away with the same view on life on earth. I triple dog dare you.😛

You can’t go on thinking that your superior intellect has brought you and you alone to truth.

Consider this… If you take into account all the people on this site as a group and include yourself in the group, you will have a 50% chance of being in the lower half of the intellectual scale on this site. Somebody need to be, right? In fact half of us would be, right?

So what makes you think that your intellect has brought you to a truth superior to anyone’s here, besides your own intellect which may be dead wrong?

IMO, the more you study science and the creation of the universe, the more you’ve got to realize that there is a guiding influence behind all of this.

No way did all this happen by itself!!!

Perhaps I’ll get to reading the blog sometime soon, but I think that in the meantime we should all pause and thank the OP, Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, and their contemporaries for inventing this field of study in which people discuss the properties of God and arguments for and against his existence. Can I start a survey on what we should call this endeavor? Philosophical Theology? Philosophy of Religion? Certainly something this revolutionary deserves a good name.

I rather like “The Atomic Church of Me”—but maybe it’s only because I cash the royalty checks.

Father Groeschel frequently says that people like Dawkins and Hitchens give atheists a bad name 🤷 . Trust him to hit the nail on the head.

I just love it when creatures deny their creator.
We humans are so darn smart.

The so-called proofs for the existence of God are basically issues that belong to the realm of philosophy, which is the realm contemplated by Romans 1:20 and Dei Filius # 2, which would make resorting to the Bible and the teachings of the Church irrelevant. Hence, we could come to know about the existence of God through divine revelation (theology) and through human reason (philosophy). In the realm of philosophy, there are two general or popular ways by which we could demonstrate the existence of God. The first one is the a priori method, such as Saint Anselm’s ontological proof and, to some extent, Saint Aquinas’ concept of the esse (to be). The second one is the a posteriori method, such as Aquinas’ Five Ways.

My favorite philosophical method is the argument from contingency, which is the thread that goes through or permeates the Five Ways of Thomas Aquinas. In a debate I had with Objectivists in forum.objectivismonline.net/index.php?showtopic=8546, I tried to show that the existence of contingent reality points to the existence of a necessary entity. This debate led to the issue on the reality of contingency and since Objectivism is a materialistic philosophy, which its proponents have been trying very well to deny, my opponents debunked me by stating that there “is no physical evidence for that which is not physical.” Of course, they can say this because they believe that anything that has no physical proof of its existence does not exist. Anyway, this debate led to the question of the origin of the universe and they were having difficulty proving that the universe is eternal and not contingent. The physical sciences, such as astronomy and physics, would come in handy in this respect. Even scientists are divided on the issue. Stephen Hawking is more of a deist, unlike Carl Sagan who was an agnostic and Dawkins who is an atheist.

The concept of esse in the essay Being and Essence by Thomas Aquinas is not the same as his concept of essence and existence. For Saint Thomas, the esse is the Act of Being that gives a manner of being (essence) its fact of being (existence). Every existent has essence and existence, but it must also have esse for it to exist in reality. To get to the reality of the esse, you have to undertake laborious metaphysical abstraction. This Act of Being is God, and all created existents have being or are “to be” or exist in reality because of their participation in the being of God. They received their esse from God. This is why I said that to some extent this argument is from pure reason or is ontological. However, Saint Thomas always starts his metaphysical speculation from physical reality thus, generally, he is an a priori kind of metaphysician. He did not favor the ontological argument, which he regarded as a quantum leap from the mental to the real.

Contingency is the key in fully demonstrating the existence of God from the viewpoint of philosophy. This is as far as the existence of God is concerned. The nature of God is a different matter altogether and fully understanding the nature of God would require to resort to some sort of negative theology or understanding His nature by what He is not. This is where we have to resort to the aid of divine revelation.

I heard Christopher Hitchens on Michael Medved a couple of weeks ago. He came off as pompous and arrogant. Any source that was not his own he you go into an ad hominem attack on. When Medved brought up that one of his sources could be found on a Nazi web site, I thought he was going to go nuclear. He did threaten to hang up, if I remember right.
He is such a sad, angry man. I can’t help but wonder that he got hurt very badly somewhere along the way and is very, very angry with God. I imagine that he told God that since He allowed ‘whatever’ to happen that he was going to do everything he could to make people not believe in Him.

He needs prayer - his own and ours.

I tend to agree with you there. We’re all hurt in this life, in one way or another~ some of us choose to cling to God through our trials, whille others blame Him and wage a personal war against Him by denying his existance.

Prayers for the souls who choose this path.:signofcross:
