Ignatius Bible - 1st or 2nd Edition?

I plan on re-reading the Bible again for the first time in a long time. Anyway, I see that this site sells 2 versions of the Ignatius Bible - the original edition, and the 2nd edition.

I’ve read through some past posts on this forum and it seems like one of the changes is that the 2nd edition gets rid of the Olde English translation (thou and thee are gone).

Is this the only difference between these 2 editions? I kind of like the “thou” and “thee”. But if the 2nd edition is much better in other respects, I might give that a try.

Yes, the major difference is the elimination of the thees and thous from the original RSV. There are some other, minor changes to the text. Typically they substituted a particular word for an alternate rendering, most notably in Is. 7:14 as well as some suggested changes recommended by the Vatican. One more thing, I was looking into getting a New American Bible for a niece of mine, and it said on the usccb.org website that a new revision was coming out in “early 2009”. It’s already April and I don’t think it’s out.

Do you have any information as to whether this new edition will be out any time soon?
 
I personally like the RSV-CE with the thees and thous but I bought a RSV-2CE because the old Ignatius bible is laid out so badly that I can barely read it. The RSV-2CE is much more readable and has section headings…still no concordance but at least all the notes were added on the applicable page rather than at the end of the book. I would go with the 2CE.

Swampboy & Broobarker:

I own both, and I really believe the RSV-2CE is more readable and have heard from some Greek scholars that its translation is much more faithful to the Greek Text. No top of that, I don’t find the notes to the NAB to be all that useful (the Ignatius Study Bible series is much better). I’ve even found a used Jerusalem Bible that I much prefer to my NAB, so the NAB stays on the shelf more often than not.

Broobarker, If you’re looking for a “Daily Reader”, I really believe you can’t go wrong with the Ignatius Bible RSV-2CE. I’ve not found a perfect “Study Bible” (The Ignatius Study Bibles, the Haydock Bible and the RSV New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocrypha come close).

If you’re looking to purchase a"Study Bible", buy the RSV-2CE “Daily Reader” & then get something such as the RSV-NOAB TIMOTHY suggests. And, Then allow her to buy the NAB, JB/NJB & whatever other versions she wants to buy…

I really think that’s the best thing you can do for her.

Unfortunately no. I have tried to contact the CBA and USCCB on this and they never respond back to me. (I have a fairly easy time contacting the various Protestant translation committees about their translations, but the NAB folks never respond to me.) So, it could be this year or next. I, myself, would wait to buy any edition of the NAB until this “new” revision comes out.

Several years ago I contacted the USCCB and actually got a response. My query was regarding the unavailability of the 1970 NAB Psalms and NT on their site, as opposed to the god-awful 1986 NT and 1991 Psalms. I got a rather nasty reply that the bishops ordered these (the 1970 books) pulled and that that was the way it was going to be. 🤷

I contacted them and they got back to me this weekend. They said the new revised edition has been delayed for another year and that when they have a publication date they will announce it.

I agree, I like the changes made in the RSV-2CE, (esp; Isaiah 7:14 using ‘virgin’ instead of ‘young woman’, going back to using ‘chalice’ instead of ‘cup’, which the new Roman missal is going back to.) I also agree that the page lay out and the quality of the Bible paper and the binding is much better, and the chapter headings are also very convient. I have had my leather RSV-2CE since 2006 when it came out, and it has held up very well.
 
total control of your basement and yahoos yes the computer monitor has held up very well. in two hours its going to be stolen.
 
Father John Corapi likes the Navarre Bible but gives the RSV-CE his approval also.

Wow! They responded back to you…that is a minor miracle 😃

I am not too surprised with it being delayed.

The newer 1st editions put out by Oxford/Ignatius are nice. I just got the Oxford/Ignatius large print edition in bonded leather, and it looks real nice. And is actually the right size for a Bible. Not to small or to big. A little larger than the Oxford Annotated RSV, w/Deutercanonicals. And laid out well.

I would like to see Ignatius also release the RSV-2CE in a large print Bible. But if it is between releasing a large print version or a RSV-2CE Study Bible, I would choose the Study Bible first.
