I think this is the right place for this… Did St. Ignatius of Antioch personally know St. John the Apostle? Did St. Ignatius know Jesus?

VERY curious about this. Thanks!
 
Didn’t he live in the 100s?

If so, he may well have known S. John, but probably not our LORD.

Which Apostles Taught the Early Church Fathers?

Clement was a disciple of Peter and Paul.

Polycarp was a disciple of John.

Irenaeus was a disciple of Polycarp.

Ignatius of Antioch was a disciple of Peter and John.
 
Tradition says that he was a disciple of St John the Evangelist.

If my memory serves me, Ignatius was catechized by St. Polycarp, who in turn learned the Faith as a child at the feet of St. John the Apostle.
 
I’m reviving this thread because I recently “discovered” the writings of Ignatius of Antioch and I have been stunned at how powerful they are.

I read his letters in a book of the writings of the early Church fathers, and after I read I felt a real personal connection with him. I’m amazed that he wrote these things while literally on his way to be martyred. It’s like we get a brief window into the life of this man, and it’s all too short, but somehow the briefness makes it even more poignant.

Anyone else love Ignatius of Antioch?

He is one of my favorite writers and, he is my all time favorite of the second century writers! 👍
 
“They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they confess not the Eucharist to be the flesh of our Saviour Jesus Christ, which suffered for our sins, and which the Father, of His goodness, raised up again.” - St Ignatius of Antioch (disciple of the Apostle John), Epistle to Smyrnaeans, Ch 7

“…being under the guidance of the Comforter, in obedience to the bishop and the presbytery with an undivided mind, breaking one and the same bread, which is the medicine of immortality, and the antidote which prevents us from dying, but a cleansing remedy driving away evil, that we should live in God through Jesus Christ.” - St Ignatius of Antioch (disciple of the Apostle John), Epistle to the Ephesians, Ch 20

St Ignatius of Antioch was ordained a bishop the year Sts Peter and Paul were martyred (AD 67). St Ignatius was a disciple of St John the Apostle. St Ignatius died a martyr about (c. AD 108) ten years after the Apostle John passed away.
