A technical question really. I took an Ikon painting class a few months back, and really found it a spiritual experience. I’d love to continue to develop my skills.

I know I could prepare boards myself, but this can take months, adding layer after layer of plaster and glue. Does anybody know where I could buy prepared boards, egg tempera paints, gold leaf etc. for ikon painting?

Thanks,
David

Egg tempera was used because that was the common medium in Byzantine times.

Many iconographers today use acrylics for the same reason.

Hi David

Try this site www.iconofile.com

They will give you a listing of dealers for supplies including panels around the world. You should be able to find someone in the U.K.

You might also want to try your local art supply shop. There are some WONDERFUL pre-mixed egg tempera paints that are from the Netherlands that you can buy in London and the do look gorgeous on ikons.

My vote is still for acryllics as that is the medium I learned from my ikon teacher and a couple of Russian Masters that I studied with.

Hope this helps…
