Hello everyone.
My name is Sean and I need advice. I am a 14yr old catholic, and unlike most teens, I take my religion seriously. I have a hamster who is very ill at the moment, and I have read up on pet euthanasia. I thought this would be a good thing to put it out of its misery, but should I? I knew that catholics are against euthanasia, but it is the same with pets? Its really ill and it shall be buried in the garden when it dies. If it is done, it is very humane and does not hurt the pet.

I would have done it by now but I kept thinking is this the right thing to do? All your help is appericiated in this matter 🙂

Sincerely,
FishKeeper

Hey Honey,
I’m sorry to hear about your little pet. Pets are not the same as humans, they don’t have a “soul”. If your little pet is suffering, it is perfectly humane to put them out of their misery. My prayers are with you now.
Pam.

Thank you for your help and prayers. I know it is humane and painless, but because Jesus didn’t want euthanasia on humans, does he believe its ok with pets?

The Catechism reminds us that animals are to be treated humanely. When an animal is suffering and will not recover from its illness, it is respectful of the animal’s nature to euthanize it.

It does not have an immortal soul.

So the answer is “yes”: Jesus is OK with this.

I would suggest asking your parents for help, and not attempting it on your own.

They may be able to suggest the best way to end your pet suffering.

Oh dear: YES! This is not a do-it-yourself operation for someone who does not know what he is doing!!

As a veterinarian of 20 years, I’ve treated a number of hamsters and have euthanized many pets.

First, you should consider taking your hamster to a local veterinarian. Many times sick does not mean dying, and a good veterinarian can most times be able to find out whether your hamster is likely to recover with treatment or is likely to die.

Second, being against humane euthanasia applies to humans only and not animals, from a Catholic perspective. If your hamster is suffering and is not likely to recover with proper veterinary care, it is perfectly OK to have him or her euthanized by a veterinarian.

Despite what some people might say, God made people in his own image, but did not do the same for animals. We have been put in charge of his animal kingdom here on earth, and that includes sometimes humanely ending their suffering.

If it is not a sin to kill animals to eat, then it’s definitely not a sin to kill them in order to put them out of their misery!

Dear Sean: If the hamster is a dwarf hamster, it may be simply dying naturally. Dwarf hamsters usually fail and die rather quickly (in a day or so) between 18 months to 2 years old. For regular-sized hamsters, it’s a little bit older, but when they decline, they still die pretty quickly. You don’t say how old your hamster is, but perhaps if it is dying naturally, it will be over with quickly without your intervention. At any rate, God bless you for considering the morality of your actions. If you do have to euthanize your pet, it’s all right.

FishKeeper -

My condolences are with you regarding your sick hamster. I’m an animal lover myself and understand how difficult it is when a pet is sick or dying.

Also, good for you about taking your religion seriously at 14 years old!

Regarding your sick hamster, animals do not have immortal souls. They cannot unite their sufferings to Christ. There is no reward for their suffering on earth. As other posters have mentioned, we have been charged by God to care for all the creatures of the earth. That includes ending their uneeded suffering. Take the little guy to the vet and see how serious things have gotten. It possible that he will get better, but maybe not. The vet will give you the best course of action.

May God be with you.

Animals have temperory souls- SOul meaning life

see what is said at newconscience.googlepages.com see the mereness of truth section, and the sections on morals and the like.

God is Reality- your hamster will be remembered forever by God, and therefore exists forever. It is temporary in our world, nd in other senses though. I think the idea of forever a pet in a moment with God is beautiful. It’s why contraception is like murder- it’s killing God’s dreams. The hamster may be killed. Just check if you can afford avoiding it first- my kitty kat got some surgery, and is alive. Maybe also pray for it, or ask a priest to bless it, it may help.👍 🤷 😊 😦 :o 😉 🙂
