DatGangstaStuff,

I know where you’re coming from. I’m a graphic designer and a number years ago I pirated graphics software. Like you, at the time I didn’t realy know what to do because I knew that earning the money for the software I used would take time and hard work, yet I knew that pirating software was stealing and thus an offense to God (aka sin). Under the guidance of a good catholic youth minister, I decided to take the long and hard road; I bought the software (worth over $1000) and continued working. After college I was again low on money and I knew that the software I bought previously was outdated and probably wouldn’t cut it for the kind
of work I was going to do. At the time I was also seeing a councelor, who was also a good freind of mine, and after talking to him about where I was in life he decided, out of charity, to purchace for me the software I needed to do my work. The rest is history.

My advice (if I may give it)? If you’re friend won’t buy a legal copy of the software you use, he’s apprently fine with offending God by stealing it. Even if it’s a bunch of guys charging through the roof for they’re software, they still have the right, by the fact that they are the authors (creators) of the software, to charge what they want (even if it’s a ludicrous amount). The high price that the authors of the software charge is not a justification for stealing, ever. The fact that you’re concience bothers you about this
issue is a very good and normal thing because you should be bothered by it. When anyone of us sin against God it ought to bother us, and if it doesn’t, it means that our concience has become dull, and that’s not good at all because our concience’s act like an alarm that warns when we are in danger of commiting sin.

If in the end, after reading what people in this thread have said, you still don’t understand why software piracy is wrong, then just accept the fact that you don’t understand, stop pirating, and offer things up to God to take care of. After all, ultimately, if God does want you to produce music (for Him, that is, to glorify Him with), He’ll do the same thing for you that He did for me, that is, provide a morally correct way of getting the software you need in you’re hands.

Pax Vobiscum,
Rocco

Yo, Rocco…

Thanks for understanding where I’m coming from. All through this I’ve promised myself it wouldn’t stand in the way of making music- I’m meant to make it- lyrics, lyrics- I’m here to write lyrics and rap. I don’t expect any person on this forum or in the world to understand it.

I guess I’m gonna have to buy that software for my friend, huh? He won’t take it, but I’ll just buy it to compensate the companies and do the right thing… I’ll have to work up the money… Until then I’ll use my friend’s stuff with the full intention of buying it as soon as I can… I don’t think it’ll be much of a problem. I just gotta work up the cash and go to Confession.

Thanks again for your help. This has been an issue for me. God bless you in your work.

Et cum spiritu tu.

Oh, by the way, I’m quitting this whole forum. It really hasn’t helped me. Its just like the equivalent of being told I’m damned for every action. Peace out.
