Someone was posting about pirating music that they already owned in some for or other. I want to politely say that I also believe this may not be entirely justified. On your part I understand that you are not stealing from the artist or owner of the rights of the artist. You are only getting what you already seem to be entitled to. On this grounds I am not sure if I object or not but I see you point. But where I find a problem is that in pirating music you are contributing to someone else’s immoral act of posting the material illegally. You are gaining from their fault. Granted, it is up there to be shared regardless of whether you accept it or not, but I still think in principle to partake of stolen goods or the sin of another is in a sense to commit or participate the same sin.

For a few years I downloaded peer to peer music for my IPOD, but I didn’t think it was wrong. Here’s why. Almost all of the songs I downloaded I had already paid for as I had the 45’s and albums. I don’t do this anymore, I now download on ITUNES for the ones I missed.

There is also a few phono players out now that you can actually play a record on and burn a cd. I found this very helpful for both downloading into my IPOD and also for getting rid of or selling the records.

I also think that there is a difference between owning an album or 45 on record and downloading an MP3. There is difference in quality and in who might be getting paid for circulating the specific version. Say that you own something on DVD or VHS, that would not justify walking into a store and taking the same title on Blue Ray or downloading a copy of it.

Furthermore, I also think that it is not good to make a copy of something and then sell the original copy. I have taken all my CD’s (virtually) and made them into MPS’s on my computer. I have the right to do this because I own the CD. But if I went out and sold the original CD, then I would not have the right by law to own the back up digital copies. It would be like making a copy of a book and then keeping that and giving the other away. For every copy of something that exists someone should have been paid at least one time for that copy. If you sell it, that is legal because only one person at a time owns the copy that was legitimately obtained, but then you can not also keep a copy. Though you can make backups for your personal use, but you can not give those way or lend them either, but you can lend out the original, assuming that you will get it back.

Sorry, I do not mean to be quarrelsome or harsh, and have nothing against you personally. But these are areas where I want to offer what I believe to be true.

I understand your view, but I disagree on some things. Usually the quality of an MP3 is better than an old 45 or scratchy album, however, most of the ones I downloaded WERE the same thing. I paid a lot of money for these records, and I bet that a lot of peer-sharing consumers at the time had made copies of theirs.

I want to make clear that I respect your opinion, and I no longer do this. I have downloaded the cds that I brought specifically for my IPOD and then sold the cd. What does irritate the rock n roller from the 50’s and 60’s are some of these songs are “one hit wonders” that the music industry chose not to release on cds. Cameo was one of them at one time. And ITunes are very selective on cd’s they do carry. I have found more on Amazon then I have every found on ITunes.

However, as I said I do download on ITunes now even though they don’t have all that I want either. I stopped peer to peer many years ago, but I still believe the music industry is way greedy, and that’s why they are going out of business. People will not buy a cd for only one song—way too much expensive.

If you are in the younger generation, it is easier to download songs from them, but I notice on ITunes that many of their songs are “re-recorded”.

As I said I now have a machine that WILL turn my music into cd’s that I can download into my IPOD>

Too bad they didn’t come up with this earlier. And I love Vinyl records. They are a BIG improvement over CD’s.especially the classical ones.
