As more and more people of different races and cultures enter the United States and the ethnic composition of the country changes, immigration becomes a more intensely debated issue. What do you think, do you favor tighter immigration restrictions and argue that immigrants take jobs away from U.S. citizens, drain social services, and resist learning English. Or do you believe of holding America’s historic commitment to immigration and believe that immigrants keep the nation strong, economically competitive, and culturally rich. The question of whether America’s doors should be open or closed will continue to be intensely debated in the courts. What do y’all think.

It’s more complex than that. I believe our doors are as legally open as they should be, but illegal immigration is a different issue.

On the language side, I think we cater to spanish-speakers too much. Everyone should learn english, just as immigrants of the past did. To focus on the language of one group of immigrants is unfair to the immigrants from China, Laos, etc. A common language is the best way to make it work.

God Bless,

Robert

**Legal immigration is and always has been an asset to this country.

Breaking our laws to come in illegally should be reason to be deported “then and there” and to NEVER allow entrance to the USA again.

Common values, learning English and fitting into society as a whole has also been valued since this country was started.

The majority of the illegal immigrants are hard-working people who contribute to our South Texas economy. If the doors were to be shut, many industries here would be in serious trouble.

Unfortunately, their illegal status can cause many problems for everyone. For example, the fear of deportation prevents many victims from reporting crimes, leaving the criminals to strike repeatedly. It also prevents many from taking advantage of English classes and from mixing with folks who speak primarily English. (As someone who has studied Spanish, I can attest to how dificult it is to learn another language as an adult.)

In my not so humble opinion, I believe President Bush was on the right track with his immigration proposal. It acknowledged the dignity of the immigrants and their contributions to our society as well as the problems caused by not controlling immigration.

Perhaps we should fully vet his recommendations.

Doors should be closed and heavily regulated as to who can come in.

I have to disagree.

For one, recent news reports of increase in diseases like TB are on the rise or reappearing because of illegal immigrants. I guess it is more important for businesses to get cheap labor rather than the health and safety of the legal citizens of this country.

How would you feel about these illegals if they raped your daughter then finding out that the thug was arrested for other crimes but INS refused to do something? How about if your child contracted a potenially fatal disease because someone came here illegally?

I’m a big fan of immigration. It is what has made our country strong though the centuries.

I am also a big fan of immigration. Legal immigration. It is what has made our country great. We don’t see thousands emigrating from here.
They way it was done when my family came to this country. I just feel we need to know who is here (terrorists) and if they will become a burden for others to care for (unemployable). Or in the case of the “new” TB and polio from the third world is the are a danger to our citizens.

Stop all illegal immigration. Put up a wall. Patrol it. Have armed guards that actually stop people from crossing (gasp!).

I have no problem with legal immigrants, and I’m sure that many of the illegals are honost people looking for work, but that doesn’t mena that others aren’t running drugs & weapons, or commiting crimes in the US. Just last year, my brother-in-laws house was broken into by some illegals while they were out. They stole food, a couple of guns, clothing, and some small valuables. What if they had been home? What if it had just been his wife and children? Who knows what might have happened…I know this- if he’d been home they would have been shot!

Lets close the border, sort out who should & should not be here, and then when everything is all settled down, allow some immigration.

My brother tested positive for TB about a year ago. It wasn’t anything they couldn’t treat, but, the treatments took much to treat them, and over a year… He is a teacher and almost all of his students are ESL. We know where he got it from. The bad part, he has three little ones at home… If it was worse he would have to stay away from them, and maybe loose his job.

I think that having so many things that cater to Spanish speakers does not help them, it hinders them… How are they really going to achieve anything without noing English…

One more thing, I really don’t believe a lot of the illegals want to become citizens. Our diocese has a program where they will pay for illegals to become citizens… I don’t know how much it is used. But, wform what I have generally seen they don’t want to live here or become citizens… They just want to make money and leave.

Oops! Forgot to mention…he lives in Arizona about 50 miles from the border…

I am one person and my experience is limited to who I have met over the years. I have lived most of my life in the SouthWest and I have met many, many, many illegal immigrants (from Dons to pions). I have yet to meet one I did not like. OK, so it is only one man’s experience. But if that has been mine, and you all know how fussy I am, there must be an awful lot of very nice illegal immigrants out there who are here, primarily, to work.

I have seen the poverty in one country in particular. I think illegal immigration has to do with the poverty in their own country. I know that there are people who come to our country to try to better themselves. I think that these kind of people should be allowed to stay.

But then again, we have a lot of people who use their status, illegal status, as an excuse. I know that there are people who use the system for their own purposes. They come to our country, have children and get on food stamps and welfare. Why? Because they can. I have seen people who lie to the welfare system stating that they have no job and need help. (Yes I have turned them in!) How can we prove they are lying?
Well, we can’t because they do not have a legal social security number, so we can not track it.

I believe that if in the future these people can apply for a work visa, if the Government finds that anyone in their families was on food stamps or any kind of welfare, they should not get their Visa. I know in my State, ( one of 11 states that allow illegal immigrants to apply for a drivers license) if you are illegal, you can still get state health care in case of an emergency. I dont think that this is fair. So many tax dollars going out for this. And they send all of the money that they make to their own country. Who is gaining with all of this? Who is paying for all of this? The legal immigrants and the Citizens are.

I am a Christian lady, and believe that everyone deserves a chance. I love my fellow man, and have compassion for the poverty in other countries, but using the resources here for their own gain is wrong!!!

Well, I married an illegal immigrant, so I admit I’m biased.
He’s legal now.
I dislike the term “illegal”, and prefer undocumented foreigner.

Someone made a movie called The Day the Mexicans Disappeared, something like that. It shows what would happen to the economy if all the undocumented workers didn’t show up one day. Any of you want to pick tomatoes for a living? I did it for one day, and couldn’t look a tomato in the eye for months afterwards.
We use these people to harvest our crops, then pick on them for not having papers. True, some are criminals, but most are honest and hard working.

We should encourage other countries to provide better conditions for their citizens so they don’t all want to come here.

But he was here illegally. The term undocumented workers is just more lib poop to make it seem ‘not as bad’. They need to come over legally… not illegally. And I doubt thier honesty since they broke the law by being here illegally to begin with.

There are plenty on teenagers that would pick the tomatoes and other crops that would need picking. If not oh well. Let the farmers bring them over legally.

The Catholic answer to ILLEGAL immigrants is to let them become residents. They support he LIBERAL answer to the problem which is no answer at all.
The Republicans like the cheap labor and the excuse not to raise the minimum wage. The democrats like all the probably indebted voters. So no one is realy thinking about AMERICA ! only their own interests. Send them Back ! thats the answer.Seal the border ,in fact close it for 2 weeks see how Mexico likes that.

The current situation is horrible. It is virtually impossible for an unconnected, unskilled person to immigrate legally. It is EASY to get in illegally. Once in, workers automatically have their paychecks docked and contributions are made to social security on phony numbers for which there will never be claims. Businesses get to pay low wages, no benefits and no risk of worker’s comp/ lawsuits. The rest of America gets Social Security saved in spite of the abortion tragedy that would otherwise destroy SS.

In other words, the system punishes those who would like to immigrate legally, take on hard and low paying jobs (by our standards), and would expect to someday receive benefit for their tax contributions. It rewards business owners by providing cheap, disposable workers and SOMETIMES rewards illegal immigrant through occassional amnesty programs.

This is clearly insane.

What we need to do is get TOUGH on border security and shut down illegal migration. At the same time, we need to add at least one zero to the immigration quotas (maybe more), cut the red tape and open the doors to those tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to be free! Just make sure they aren’t terrorists or convicts, that’s all.

This country would be highly blessed to have in influx of fully legitimate new blood who value hard work, family, and typically have a catholic faith! If America were more welcoming to these folks and accepted them as the blessings that they are, they would be a lot more inclined to join the melting pot instead of feeling marginalized and resentful of the gringos who exploit them so.

Hmm, why would we want to consider the CATHOLIC point of view? Oh, wait… 🙂

Everyone likes the cheap labour, frankly. It keeps the essential lower-paid jobs filled. It’s not a very honourable way to run an economy, but all western countries are doing it.

Remember that immigrants, legal or illegal, can’t vote. Only citizens vote. (Legal immigrants still get taxed though! - what was that line, ‘no taxation without representation?’ Oh well 🙂
