Tension have today increased further between Vatican and China over Episcopal ordinations.
Fr Joseph Yue Fusheng, illicitly ordained as Bishop of Harbin, has incurred automatic excommunication but the Vatican has praised the approved new auxiliary bishop of Shanghai —Thaddeus Ma Daqin—for rejecting a state-controlled church role.
Official sources claimed that Bishop Ma has freedom of movement, but local reports suggest Chinese authorities have restricted him from exercising his Episcopal ministry because they were displeased by the bishop’s speech during his ordination giving up his role in the state-controlled Catholic Patriotic Association (CPA).
