I’ve been shopping for a four-way medal. Traditionally, they are inscribed with the words “I am a Catholic. Please call a priest” on the reverse. These days, however, a good number of them do not have this inscription.

When I first started my search, I was insistant that I only buy one with the phrase included. But lately, I’ve wondered if that phrase would actually have any effect in the modern world.

It seems that if I’m in the company of people I know when something happens, they already know my desires for the sacraments.

If I’m in the company of strangers, the only thing they’re going to call is 911. The only thing paramedics are going to care about is geeting me to a hospital, and no hospital I ever worked seemed to pay any attention to such things.

So should I bother on insisting on the inscription? Does anyone have any anecdotal evidence that anyone takes notice?

I think you should get one that says “I am a Catholic, please call a priest.” Even if it’s unlikely someone will look at it, it couldn’t hurt to have it just in case. I’ve also seen visor clips that say “The owner of this car is a Catholic. In case of serious accident please call a priest.”

I carry a card in my purse that says, " I am Catholic, please call a priest." It also has the phone number for the local parish. I also list emergency numbers and any medications that I am taking. That way everything is together. It may not be the police that call, but I hope that someone will call if I am ever in serious condition. If it wasn’t written down, no one would know, until my husband got to the hospital. I figure, better safe then sorry. 👍

If you are a man at least 18 years of age, I recommend joining the Knights of Columbus 👍
The back of my membership card bears that phrase (and also urges the reader to call the council officer named on the back)

I have a brand new 4-Way “Cruciform” Medal that has the inscription you are looking for on the back. Please let me know if you are interested in it…The one I wear was made in 1830 and as you can probably guess…I am really attached to it due to its age…it gives me chills to think how many devout Catholics have worn this same Cruciform in the last 175 years…Please send me a private message if you are interested in this new one I have…it doesn’t have a chain, but you can find one of those easily. I will sell it to you for what I paid for it…Thanks Sonny

I think there are enough people who care. If they see the request they will make the call. People will surprise you.

I still think it might be pointless, because this is the only way I can see it going:

[dials 411 on her cell phone]

What city, please?

Metropolis.

Okay. Other party’s name?

Dunno. I need the number for a Catholic church.

There are over 30 Catholic churches in Metropolis, Ma’am.

I don’t care. I’m on Main Street. Are there any on Main Street?

sigh Yes. How about St. John the Baptist Catholic Church?

Yes, that will be fine…

Would that be the convent number or the rectory number?

sigh

A little later…

[dials the rectory number on her cell phone]

Thank you for calling St. John the Baptist, a Roman Catholic Community. Our offices are currently closed. Press 1 to hear a listing of Mass times. Press 2 to leave a message for the Rectory Staff. Press 3 to leave a message for the Education Office. If this is an emergency, please press 4.

[presses 4]

If this is a bone fide emergency please page the Priest on call at 555-0123. He will return your call as soon as possible.

Still later…

[Answers her cell phone]

This is Father Smith from St. John the Baptist. I’m returning a page I received.

Yes! Thank you for calling back! I found this guy on passed out on the sidewalk today and he was wearing this necklace that said “I’m a Catholic, please call a Priest.”

Ah! Okay! Thank you very much for calling! What was this man’s name?

I don’t know; he was unconscious.

I see. Well, where is he now?

I don’t know–the ambulance already took him away.

Do you know what hospital they went to?

They wouldn’t tell me because I’m not a relative.

I understand. Well, thanks for calling, but there’s nothing I can do without a name or location…

It might be possible to leave your info with any local hospital that you might be taken to in case of an emergeny. You can probably tell them your religion and put a priest on the contact form or maybe fill out info about organ donation. Just a thought you could look into.

I have one of those cards in my purse; but I’ve always wanted to write underneath “After you’ve called the Doctor” 😃
