I'm a former atheist. Ask me anything.

You are very reticent to accept proven religious theories; these discussions can go on and on. There is much evidence to prove you wrong. Nonetheless you do your bidding we will continue ours.

However an atheist such as yourself is at least trying to converse with us; althoughbeit you don’t seem to have a sincere care for what we say. Compared to what your commarades say on the atheist forum it is deplorable; not even a shred of intellect in what I observed; just complete and utter hate that is unjustified.

The real reason you cannot accept is not based on knowledge but you have a morbid fear of believing. Forgive me if I am psychoanalyzing here; I would gather it’s because of my indoctrination from secular studies in university. I too hold degrees from prestigious universities.

God Bless and we shall continue to pray for you!
you know I responded to this … but then I thought, why bother? If it makes you feel better, think what you want of me (and others like me).

You keep changing your religion Yankee. What is this religulous? Are you having doubts?

God Bless and we are still praying for you; I mention you in my group rosary prayer however it does sound odd when I mention my intention and say “I pray for unbelievers and for Yankee.”🙂

Has anyone grown tired of this thread yet?
And where has the original poster gone?

(So impressed with Josie’s efforts and knowledge. Go girl!)

Also, I don’t know where Humble Maid Lives but the point about the media is so true in my case. Here in the UK at the moment there are no quality religious programmes anywhere. (The BBC people would probably rather die than give some air time.) There is so much anti-religious stuff out there and the moment there is a tiny churchy voice speaking in public there are many hateful responses to it. Us Catholics are truly taking over the world LOL
Dear Contra Mundum

I live in a place where God and Jesus has been taken out of every public institution and being completely forsaken. We cannot so much as utter Jesus in a classroom without being reprimanded if one is heard to be speaking about Him. People are going to court to have their right to pray christian prayers in the municipal assembly as was the custom for decades if not even centuries because a specific group of liberalists say that it is against the constitution and violates other ethnicities. Funny thing though, no one was complaining.

God Bless:)

I read over my post and realized that I made some typos. I tend to interchange words from other languages to english. Thank you for understanding.🙂

the delusion continues:confused:. Religulous was a movie by Bill Maher making fun of religion (I thought it might be cute).

What delusion?

Of course you are not having doubts…
I can honestly say I have no doubt that religion is false (much more than most theists can say with regard to their own religion). I do not entertain any possibility that the supernatural events described in your bible are true. With regard to bigger questions, like is there some sort of call it higher power or being(s) beyond our cognition who may have had a hand in creating the universe? I don’t doubt or believe either way (so it’s unfair to call it either).

Another thing I am sure of is that there isn’t a god who answers prayers or actively intervenes in human affairs (or for that matter intervenes in the physical universe). If there was something that put this universe into motion, the only laws it or they left for us are the laws of our physical universe.

Yankee, I want you to be completely honest with me, but do you ever get the desire to just talk to someone that might possibly be listening to you? Do you wish that God did exist?

That’s not a relevant question, it’s only an attempt to bait me into some sort of peculiar emotive discussion. :harp:

Man, I’ve never seen anyone distrust Christians/theists as much as you Yankee. Honestly, it’s a miracle you’re actually here attempting to discuss these issues with us. Do you have anyone close to you who’s a Christian?

I think it was a combination of two things. Lately, I had been kind of coasting at work, not approaching new projects with the dedication I used to have. One of my younger colleagues is a Mormon and works very hard. I would look at him and think about the faith he lives by and what a good example he sets.

Then, at about the same time, I started listening to a series of lectures on CD about the history of Christian theology. The ideas in the lectures – the Trinity, the incarnation, grace, and so on – called out to me.

So, in effect, I asked myself, Why should I continue to resist believing in something that is intellectually satisfying, comforts me, and will help make me a better person? There was no reason to keep resisting. So I opened my heart and mind to God.
.
How have you dealt with the sin issue, which separates man and God?

Distrust has nothing to do with it. You keep trying to personalize the discussion with questions that have no bearing on the issue being discussed (I assume because logical arguments are starting to elude you).

I was an atheist for years before recently finding faith again. If you have any questions about “the atheist lifestyle,” I’d be happy to try to answer them.

.

Question coming up:

    1. if Catholicism was incredible before, & atheism was satisfying to heart & mind - why the change ?
    1. And can’t “finding faith again” be understood as a series of chemical reactions in the brain ?** If** so, why privilege them any more than you would a reaction caused by medication ? If God is not significant in chemical events in the brain caused by meds - why should He be significant in the chemical events to which “finding faith again” either are reducible, or, perhaps, should be reduced  ?
    1. Doesn’t the human capacity for changing beliefs suggest that none of them are of any ultimate significance ?
If three questions is cheating, answer any you like; or none. Over to you 🙂

What is the “atheist lifestyle” (I’d sure like to know, because my life is pretty uneventful)?

No, it’s just that I don’t want to tax your brain too much. 😛 Don’t worry Yankee I have a large repertoire of logical arguments waiting to be let out.

p.s. I’m curious because I only wish to understand your mentality (isn’t that the reason you came to CAF, to understand the motivation behind our beliefs/faith), or how you came to be this way, and if or whether or not you had any positive christian influence surrounding you?
