Define ‘being transgender’.

No, I’m not being facetious. If being transgender means you have a male body but believe you really are, or should be, female, or have a female body but believe you really are male: then no. Not a sin. You merely have a belief.

If being transgender means you desire sex-reassignment surgery and/or hormone therapy, then again no. Not a sin. You want medical treatment. We may argue about whether you should have it, but that doesn’t make either of us sinful.

If being transgender means you dress, act and present yourself as a member of the sex you believe you are or wish to be, then still not a sin, unless you commit fraud or misrepresentation in the process.

If being transgender means something else, then I’d have to know what it means to you. But my default answer is no. Being trans is not a sin.

A transgender is a a person whose gender identity doesn’t match their birth sex. I am a male who thinks they’re a woman. I have tried to make myself think I’m a guy but to no avail it seems impossible.

I think it’s said a lot but you really should talk to a priest.

You are a Catholic. Period. No need to qualify. I’m just a lay person so what I say doesn’t hold much weight on this issue. Talk with a priest.

The mental state is not a sin. However, gender reassignment or marriage with someone of the same sex as your birth sex is a serious sin. I highly recommend praying the Rosary daily, it has gotten me out of persistent mortal sin and many temptations that I would have been powerless to resist otherwise.

I’m kinda freaked out to tell a priest that I have thoughts like this. The only person I’ve told is my therapist.

Ok. I don’t plan on transitioning by the way but I also have same sex desires am I doomed to celibacy?

Yes, please talk to your Priest. If it would help, maybe ask your therapist for advice as to how to tell him.

It’s normal to be scared to bring up something highly personal, but 9 out of 10 fears are unfounded. Priests talk with all sorts of people during their ministry from all walks of life. It will be fine.

Peace.

No, not necessarily. Lots of people with same-sex attraction marry someone of the opposite sex and have a perfectly happy and healthy relationship. I realize this is not the prevailing narrative, but it’s been known to happen.

Your mileage may vary. If it would be healthier for you not to be in a relationship, so be it. But that’s something you have to work out with your priest and your therapist.

You may not do anything, of course, that would be immoral–whether engaging in same-sex relationships or transitioning to another gender.

Any sexual activity besides that between a married man and woman is a serious sin. But you may come to embrace the cross of celibacy. Thousands of religious men and women, most of whom are straight, freely choose to practice it their entire lives. Before I had a change of heart, I used to despair at the thought of having to be celibate for years. But now I find it rewarding. Maybe it’s a little more than just doom.
