Going back to Saint Teresa of Avila and other authors of her time would say “I am a worm” and other self effacing remarks. What do they mean by this kind of wording? Or more to the point why am I a wretch? I have low-self-worth. So does God want me to hate my self or does God want humility?

Perhaps an analogy would help. I remember a scientist talking about the possibility of aliens visiting earth. He said that it is possible that an alien civilization is a billion years or more older than us and thus over a billion years more advanced. We look at human beings who lived mere thousands of years ago as backwards and ignorant, thus an alien civilization over a billion years more advanced with us would probably perceive us and our technology much the way we perceive primates.
Its all about context. When we think of what human beings are capable of we could become prideful in our accomplishments and potential, but compared to God we are basically nothing. That is why saints and mystics who have unique experiences of the divine use such self effacing terms.
However, it need not lead us to despair. Its just a reminder that our worth is not in what we do but in what God can do through us. If God Almighty can see fit to love and care for us, then how much more should we love and care for ourselves and one another…
