when I was little, my cousin told me a scary story about “Bloody Mary” and I’ve been afraid of them since. What makes it bad is that I’m prone to intrusive thoughts. If I look into a mirror while I’m brushing my teeth, if I so much as think of that story he told me, I’ll get really nervous and start having intrusive thoughts about it. Today I thought of the story while I was brushing my teeth and I’m afraid of mirrors
What should I do to get over this? It freaks me out.

First, remind yourself that the Bloody Mary thing is superstition, a ghost story, not real; do so once when you need to, don’t dwell. Then, change the focus. You used the example of brushing your teeth. Ideally, you brush for 2 minutes (upper - inside and outside and lower - inside and outside). Instead of counting the minutes pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be and the St. Michael Prayer. We should wash our hands for about 20 seconds and I find a Hail Mary works for that and if you happen to pass a mirror unexpectedly or because it’s in your path, pray a Glory Be.

Another thing to consider is anyone can do this even if they don’t have a fear of mirrors i.e, you won’t just do this to ward off fear but to honor the Trinity, Mary, and St. Michael.

I suffer from intrusive thoughts sometimes and this what I do.

Intrusive thoughts. Do you take any kind of medication? For OCD for example? Do you have any other intrusive thoughts about other things? There is St. Dymphna too.You can ask for her intercession.

Ya got to talk to the man in the mirror! Ya got to make him change his ways! 🙂

Hey, it does sound serious, talk to your doctor about seeing someone. Praying for you!

PS I also say Our Fathers and Hail Mary’s in the bathroom, have for the better part of the last decade…can’t remember why…but it’s very relaxing and keeps me on task.

Do your parents know about this?

Perhaps some counseling would help. Tell them what you told us and ask them if you can get counseling.

My problem was the same , yet different ,

What I did was this, I threw a large mirror of a Cliff and watched it smash to a million bits,
And said out loud , I’v smashed this out of my life , it’s a symbolic thing that forces your past out of your life,it really worked for me, and if any thought try to reoccur ,
Just think of the smashing mirror , and repeat its in your past , time to move on,
Might be an idea to try it,🙂

Seeking professional advice before throwing a mirror might be a good idea,
They might think it’s a good idea too,
