Hey everyone, Im back. I took what I call a “leave of absence” from the Church. I wanted to be a preacher and get married and knew I couldnt do that in the Catholic Church. So I looked into some other churches. By the Grace of God I am back in the Catholic Church. I just couldnt bring myself to leave the Church, I cant turn my back on the Truth. I have decided next fall Im going to go to the Franciscan University of Stubenville and study Theology, not to go onto the priesthood but to just have a degree in theology. Not really sure what I can do with a two or four year degree in theology but its what I want to do. Thank God im back home!

Wow, welcome back…

You can still preach and get married, you just would need to put your married vocation first.

A priest’s vocation is dedicated to the bringing salvation to the people, preaching is just part of it.

Speaking of vocations, there’s always the deaconate to consider. :)…unless, of course, your a woman…:o

if you still feel a strong call to proclaim the Word and to help teach and instruct the faithful and to evangelize, by all means prepare yourself for this ministry in whatever manner your bishop has prescribed, and join in those ministries in your parish or diocese in some way
catechist
reader at Mass
facilitator for bible studies and adult education classes
sponsor for RCIA
teach parent sacramental prep classes
youth group or youth ministry
prison ministry
young adult or campus ministry
retreat team (with a formal program like ACTS or Cursillo, or for your parish)
evangelization program (our diocese has one, so do most)

If you want to go further and make any of these your day job, investigate the prereq’s and education required and go for it. Many of these full-time ministries are done by lay people in today’s church.

the difference between being a “preacher” in a denomination whose ordinations are not through apostolic succession, or are self-ordained in answer to a perceived “call”, and doing evangelization or catechetical ministry as a layperson in the Catholic Church, is that the latter is ecclesial: you teach and proclaim in full union with the teaching authority of the Church, bestowed by Jesus Christ, protected by the Holy Spirit, and with the blessings of and in obedience to your bishop.

puzzleannie gave a good list of things you can get involved witht your parish.

Maybe you are called to be a deacon too! Pray about it.
 
Thank you all for welcoming me back! I am a minister of the Eucharist and really enjoy that. Is it possible to make a living being a decon? Ive heard they cant get married either though?

It’s my understanding that many, but not all, Permanent Deacons have “outside” employment. If a man is married he may be ordained to the permanent diaconate, but if he is single he must remain so and if he is widowed he may not remarry.

Welcome back. God BLess You. You may want to schedule a meeting with your diocese Vocations Director and see what is available for you and pray for the Holy Spirit to lead you.

a married man who meets the other requirements may be ordained as a permanent deacon, but if his wife dies he may not remarry. A single man who is ordained deacon may not marry. Deacons can hold many positions with the Church, diocese or parish, and some may be paid (so may some positions held by lay people) and some are not, depends on the job.

congratulations on getting married…or wanting to be married…although the church could do with another priest…there is never enough priests…there are shortages of them over the world…but at the end of the day you yourself have to discern your own vocation because it is your life and only you can live it"]]

:extrahappy: that is fantastic news about staying with the church…remeber nothing in this world is worth giving god up…if we give him up in this life he may give ** us* up in the next life and not let us in heaven*********

if you get married you can’t become a priest (because of the vows) but have you thought about become a decon…its the next best thing…or what about a missionary…obviously you couldn’t be a religious…because of the vows but you could be like a lay missionary (memebers of the public that volunteer to go along with religious missionaries to help with their work…there is so much that you could still do in the church so don’t give up yet!!

a married man may be ordained a permanent deacon, but he may not remarry if his wife dies. a single man who is ordained may not marry.

deacons hold many positions in the Church, either with the parish, the diocese, or Catholic institutions such as schools, colleges, hospitals, charities etc. Those positions may be FT or PT, paid or unpaid. often a deacon who serves PT in a parish receives a stipend and supports his family with a “day job” or is already retired. or he may be hired to a FT position with a salary, but like most church careers, it will probably not pay comparable to a like job in the business world.
