sorry if this is not in the right section…

anyway, i’m supposed to be confirmed tomorrow at my church. My CCD teachers told my class two weeks ago that we needed to be in the state of grave to receive the sacrament so i decided i was going to confess the friday before my confirmation (today) or saturday morning. I’ve called my church asking when a priest would be available but they said none will be available those two days. I’m still looking for a priest at another church, but if i can’t find one can i not be confirmed(validly)?

There are generally no confession scheduled for Good Friday or Holy Saturday, but if you request a confession, every priest is required to give you one. There is no day when confession is “forbidden”. Approach any priest and insist that you be given a confession. If you can’t find one, your confirmation is still valid.

If you truly cannot find a priest to hear your confession, then simply make a good act of contrition, and commit to receiving the sacrament of confession as soon as possible following you confirmation. Your state of sin will not invalidate your confirmation. It may prevent you from receiving the graces (although probably not if you make every effort to go to confession first, but cannot), but once you are later absolved of your sins, you will receive the fullness of the graces from confirmation.

I’d say unless you’ve got mortal sin, you’re good until confession is available.

Well if you have learned nothing else you learned not to put things off till the last minute right?

BTW - if you are near a big city you might see if a parish run by Franciscans still has confessions available.

No, that isn’t the case. We had an opportunity to confess last week, but I knew that even if i had tried, i would of sinned many times due to my weakness of falling into temptation. My intention was to confess a day before, or the morning of my confirmation because I believed I could of held off sinning until then. I had no idea they didn’t schedule confession today/tomorrow. My intentions were good, believe me.

You could have checked into it before this - if nothing else.
Your probably should have discussed your plans with those aiding you in the sacraments.

I don’t know about Canada, but many parishes here have confessions today and especially tomorrow.

Keep calling around - or go online and look up local parishes and see if they have their schedules or last Sunday’s bulletin posted; you may find the information on confessions there. Good luck.

It is not clear from your post - did you confess then?

OOOps, before you do anything…please be sincere when you confess and that means to not sin if at all possible…when you said you would have sinned many times due to weakness…you cant go on like that. When you confess, it doesnt give you a ticket to do the same sins until the next weekend when you confess…dont just resolve yourself that you are going to sin frequently again anyway…maybe I read your quote wrong?

This is when I get really mad at parish secretaries who are clueless about church “stuff”. C’mon its almost like the gatekeeper syndrome.

Just an observation, no judgement intended. If you** know **that you will fall into sin and I am presuming mortal sin here since we are speaking of the need for confession here, and you cannot stop it do you really think that confession will do you any good? Without a firm purpose of amending your behavior which you truly intend to try to keep, the confession would be invalid anyway. You should not ever confess just so you can receive a sacrament whatever that sacrament. is. You have to be serious about it, **and **if you are serious, you can correct your behavior. Maybe you haven’t tried hard enough.

Or maybe, just maybe you are not really serious about being confirmed and are merely going through the motions.

It sure looks that way to me.

Just to note: your confirmation will be valid even if you are in a state of mortal sin. Only you will not receive any graces from it, and you would be incurring another sin by receiving in such a state.

Catch hold of a priest before and tell him that you’ve sinned and want to receive the sacrament in a state of grace.

All the best! 👍

That was some what hurtful.

But no, I’m not just “going through the motions”, I truely am thrilled I’m being confirmed. About the sins, I used to careless about church and sins and all that, but recently I’ve really tried to change my ways and attempt to live a good catholic lifestyle. But it’s just my old habits are really hard to stop, no matter how hard I try. I am improving quite a bit in not falling into temptation, but I’m just not 100%. This is why I wanted to confess as close to my confirmation as possible. I really am trying to live properly

If you have no mortal sins, you ARE in a state of grace.

Remember the three conditions for mortal sin:
1.) Grave matter.
2.) Sufficient reflection (Time enough to think about it, no impulsive action).
3.) Full consent of the will (Again, no impulsive action).

Even if the sins in question involve grave matter, IF you acted impulsively, you are still in a state of grace.

If you hit the three points on the money, you can still be confirmed. You might not receive the graces immediately, but you can still be confirmed. Try to find a priest and get it taken care of ASAP, but do not panic.

Congratulations on your confirmation.

No one is 100%. Your first post made it sound as if you can;t stop, know you can’t stop and really don’t think you can. Thats problematic.

Sorry it was hurtful. The truth often is.

Well you sure could have fooled me as that’s exactly what you have done. Are you a cradle Catholic or a convert?

As to the OP. Make every effort to go to confession. If you can’t find a confessor approach the sacrament of confirmation with fear, awe and respect and confess as soon as you can. Your salvation isn’t all about a legal transaction between you and God. He loves you and wants you to be united to the Church. Remember the closer you grow to God the more the devil is going to tempt you and try to deceive you. He’ll do everything in his power to drive a wedge between you and the other members of the Body of Christ. He’ll try to convince you you’re a bad person or that your priest is a bad pastor or that you shouldn’t be united to the Church because you’re unworthy. One must always understand none of us are “worthy” of any sacrament, they are a gift from God. In fact to abstain from the sacraments out of some false sense of piety is of itself prideful and vainglorious and is the work of the devil.

If you approach the sacrament with the proper mindset (in fact the very fact that you are worried about it tells me you are indeed serious) God will accept you. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and all of your strength and love your neighbor as yourself. Be obedient in all things to the Church and especially to your spiritual father, God has placed you together for each others salvation.

And most of all, congratulations and may God grant you many years!

Yours in Christ
Joe

While the main purpose of Confession is the forgiveness of sins, the secondary purpose is to give to a soul additional grace to help overcome their faults and weaknesses, to be better able to overcome temptations and to continue growing into full stature with Christ.

Try to think more positively toward your inclination toward sin. Each time you receive the Sacrament of Confession, repent of your sins with a firm determination to sin no more…though you will sin as you are a human being…you are strenthened by Christ & your ability to avoid falling into the same vices is strengthened.

Have a happy & holy Confirmation day. By this Sacrament we are “are more perfectly bound to the Church by the Sacrament of Confirmation and the Holy Spirit endows them with special strength so that they are more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith, both by word and deed, as true witnesses
of Christ”. (quoted part from the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church):
