I’ve been seeing a lot of these threads here on Catholic Answers Forums. First there was a Muslim thread, then two Jewish threads, and even a Baha’i thread. Well, how about our non-Catholic friends here on CAF ask us about Catholicism and we can tell you what you need to know.

Better yet, for our non-Christian friends, this can also be an “Ask a Christian Anything” thread.

I’m more than happy to lend my (rather small) expertise as well 🙂

Wow, I’m surprised I’m getting any support for this.

Why would you not be supported? Would you welcome a converts contribution?

I just thought our fellow Catholics on here might perceive this wrongly. Whatever, I’m happy you don’t. Now, let’s wait for our fellow humans who are not Catholic to ask us some stuff.

Fabulous!!! Grabs my comfy chair, blanket, notepad, pen, glasses,…

The earliest documented instance was by Ignatius of Antioch in the Letter to the Smyrnaeans (105 A.D.)

Dangit. I knew that. I’m too slow! 😂😂

Wasn’t that “wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church”? Or something close?

‘Don’t you darn Papists … Sorry, Catholics … worship Mary and the Saints?’

We give the Saints dulia, which comes all the way from the Greek “δοῦλος” meaning “servitude” in the sense of servitude (or veneration) due for men. In the case of Mary, being the greatest creature of God (even greater than the angels), we give her hyperdulia.

For God we give latria, coming all the way from the Greek “λατρεία” meaning “servitude due to God alone”. Latria is distinct from dulia in that dulia is veneration whereas latria is worship/adoration. Latria can only be given to God, to give it to Mary or the Saints would be idolatry and thus a major major sin.

Are we doing this because you believe CAF doesn’t really cover it?

Ugh… isn’t this entire forum a Catholic ask me anything?! 😂

So does this mean I get to ask really inflammatory questions about communion for the divorced and remarried, abortion, or SSPX without you all getting upset with each other? 😇

Edit: can’t forget women priests!

If you have questions about those topics, then ask away. Just be respectful please.

ok i’ll bite

did jesus perform the last supper ad orientem? or would He just like look in a mirror at himself?

Here’s one:

What’s the purpose of lighting candles when we pray?

The Last Supper was the first Mass, but the liturgy has evolved significantly over time. The Last Supper would’ve probably looked like a regular Jewish meal (but since nobody who was there is alive to tell about it, we can never really know). In fact, all the way up until the 2nd century, many Churches continued to practice the “agape (ἀγάπη) feast” in the context of the Eucharist.

Honestly, I don’t really have any questions left. They’ve all been answered, or I’ve decided that they are inconsequential.
