It would be Sacred Heart Major Seminary (SHMS) in Detroit, and I would be ordained for the Archdiocese of Detroit.

I’m interested to learn what you know about this seminary, such as:
  1. Do the faculty/staff generally lean towards liberal or orthodox?
  2. Do the seminarians generally lean towards liberal or orthodox?
  3. Is the seminary as a whole is getting more liberal or more orthodox?
  4. I’ve read Michael Rose’s book “Goodbye, Good Men!” and his negative references to SHMS. Can anyone confirm them?
  5. Does anyone know a seminarian who was asked to leave? If so, why was he asked to leave?
  6. Does anyone know a seminarian who voluntarily left? If so, why did he leave?
I’d appreciate any other comments about SHMS.

I have heard good things about this seminary.

They have Janet Smith on faculty there. She would NOT be teaching there if the seminary was at all liberal.

Although my father was there ~30 years ago, all I hear is good things about the SHM Seminary from him. So, hopefully it hasn’t changed.

Just thought I’d give my (name removed by moderator)ut … it’s always cool to hear about a local institution on an international message board. 🙂

I have know good orthodox people who have taken courses at Sacred Heart and heard some excellent things about it! 👍

My sense is that many seminaries have been getting more orthodox in recent years… new bishops take charge in a diocese and clean house. It takes a while though. But if the anecdotes in “Goodbye Good Men” date from the '80s and '90s, there’s a good chance that the people responsible are no longer in those positions.

Personall, I would recomend the Denver Archdiocese Seminary, the Lincoln, Nebraska seminary, and if a religious Congregation: I highly recomend to any guy considering the priesthood, and who is faitful the the Official teachings of the church, the Institute of the Incarnate Word(I.V.E.). There great site is: www.iveamerica.org

I also don’t know how it works but do know that you are incardinated in the Diocese in which you are ordained so I am not sure if you must be ordained but I don’t know if you can choose any seminary you wish or if certain Dioceses use certain Seminaries.

Which is absolutely irrelevant to the questions that were asked.

Melman thanks for giving your editorial review on my message. However, as much as I searched, your response to MY message did not do justice to his question, I think? Where is YOUR response to HIS question.  ?😉 :dancing: I mentioned the seminaries I did, because the way things are in our church in THIS country, they are the only CATHOLIC ones in PRAXIS. I should know, I checked out several and nearly LOST my faith. AD MAJOREN DEI GLORIAM!!!

Not an editorial review, just a statement of fact. I have no answer to the OP’s question; I know nothing of the Detroit seminary. But thanks for asking.

Greetings in Christ!!!

This is neat to read. I am in the process of sponsorship for the Diocese of Kalamazoo, MI and could be at Sacred Heart in the next couple years. I was just in Alabama at EWTN the other week talking to some wonderful orthodox priest who were raving about Sacred Heart. They were telling me that it is really becoming a top notch orthodox seminary. I hold fast to all of the teachings of Holy Mother Church and think it would be an excellent place for you to go. I will keep you in my prayers and I hope all goes well for you.

In XC,

Teddy

Teddy,

Thanks for the comments.

Can you be specific in the comments made by the priests you met?

Thanks, and maybe I’ll see you at SHMS!

Now leaning toward orthodoxy.

It’s attracting orthodox men now.

In the last ten years or so, it’s becoming more orthodox.
  1. I’ve read Michael Rose’s book “Goodbye, Good Men!” and his negative references to SHMS. Can anyone confirm them?
SHMS was not as bad as St. John’s. Let’s just say they were an accurate portrayal, but mostly from several years ago.
  1. Does anyone know a seminarian who was asked to leave? If so, why was he asked to leave?
Not personally.
  1. Does anyone know a seminarian who voluntarily left? If so, why did he leave?
Not personally.
I’d appreciate any other comments about SHMS.
There are a lot of good professors there. The program is good. And most importantly, this diocese needs all the orthodox priests we can get!! Go to SHMS! :yup:

My husband had her last semester. She is brilliant!

Gosh! You are so blessed.

If I were a man, I’d LOVE to be a priest because YOU get to touch the body and blood of Our Lord and YOU have the privilege to consecrate the Host into the Real Body and Blood of Our Lord. YOU get to be the dispenser of God’s miracle of transubstantiation.

At every Mass, that great miracle takes place. And you, as a priest, would get to be a part of it all. That is just super cool!

Man, I am so jealous. I think it would be SO neat to be a priest. You get to help people save their souls. There is nothing more important than that in the entire world, you know? WOW.

God bless you!

Luv,
Mary Ann

GOd bless you in your search. the important thing to do is to pray and to listen before Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. HE will tell you what to do…through things that we all like to think are coincidences, but are not. Spend lots of time in prayer before our Lord, and He will show you where He wants you. I pray that you WILL choose SHMS. I know several men that are attending and have attended. It IS improving from the past reputation it had (re: GOOD BY GOOD MEN), but as another person said, “it takes time.” Most importantly, YOU must know what is correct by studying what the Church teaches, by researching for yourself (interviews with orthodox priests you know from the diocese), and by staying informed through reading. It is the only way to remain faithful to the Magisterium, and to grow spiritually. This is totally your responsibility, and the rest will flow from that strong base of your relationship with God. My family and I will be praying for you!

Mary Ann…since your’e not a man, obviously you must be a woman! 😛 Maybe you should be considering a vocation (I mean, if you’re not?)

Although you could not consecrate the Host…you WOULD be able to help people, serve in spiritual direction…and how cool would it be to be a bride of Christ??? YOU could save souls in Jesus name every day also! Although the vocation doesn’t carry exactly the same things, it’s definitely closer to Christ than just a woman in a pew with the rest of the congretagion. (such as myself.)

God Bless!

I agree…Mary Ann, have you considered a vocation?

Thanks for your comments, BTW.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in Denton, NE, just outside of Lincoln, I think, would be perfect for you if you are concerned with orthodoxy. It is by far the most orthodox seminary in the US. God bless.

Leptano,

I’m in the deaconate program in Detroit and I have been taking classes at Sacred Heart this past year.

So far, I have found it to be reasonably orthodox and I’ve been enjoying my time there.

Teachers range from incredible to OK and the seminarians there do seem to be good, orthodox guys to a man.

Overall, I would recommend it.

(maybe I’ll see you in class 😉 )

God Bless,

Brendan
