I'm converting and have a question re: prayer

Hello, and thank you for reading. I am learning the proper prayers that my Priest or spiritual advisor re: being Catholic. My question is as I learn; and to use the proper words is it all right to read and pray with eyes open reading the prayers until I remember them completely?

You can pray with your eyes open and close! As long as you pray without ceasing .

The more you pray, the more the words will become familiar. Also, don’t stop praying from your heart. Pray in any way you think possible!

Read a short passage of Scripture and then take time to meditate on it, pray after meditating, then be quiet and listen to the Holy Spirit.

Pray, pray, pray!!!

Absolutely! I pray when i am driving, and I keep my eyes open then too altho I too am a big believer in praying with one’s eyes closed to minimize distractions.

Learning the prayers through praying along with recordings (without using a written version–also allowed me to keep my eyes closed!) was very helpful, and one can find and download recordings online. I just listen several to many times, and gradually start praying along with a lot of mistakes and just keep going til I get the prayer down. Memorizing audioly (?) works so much better for me than memorizing solely through reading.

Hello Paul and welcome home. Definitely you can pray with your eyes open. I pray the rosary using my rosary ring on the 20 minute bus ride to work or on longer train/plane/car trips.

Welcome Yes you can keep your eyes open. I pray everywhere…when driving,running my bath,doing housework, in the cinema, while shopping putting petrol in the car…any situation.

There are many different forms of prayer. It is not only the formulaic prayers as in Our Father Hail Mary etc. Talk to God, build a relationship with Him. Make petitions of request and love for others. Perhaps visit the prayers intentions forum here and see how many people need our prayers and what type of personal prayers people use aswell as formulaic.

God loves our prayers not matter how we say them and He knows the sincerity of our hearts.

I agree completely. Prayer, just even respectfully having a sort of conversation with Him, it’s always a soothing balm. And you know, I’ve fond that if my prayer requests, or whatever I’m asking for is truly meant to happen, it has happened. I, personally, have leanred much faster (in classes and in foreign languages) if I write things down AND hear. Writing things, even if IN your prayer book? They access another area of memory and sort of get all areas covered so it’s ‘recrded’ better.
