So a newly wed couple must never have sex unless they want to have a baby?
That’s not quite correct. It isn’t required that a newlywed couple “want to have a baby.” But they must be open to the possibility, and not do anything to actively thwart such a possibility.

Ponder for a moment the difference between desiring something, and permitting something to happen.

Not being funny, but this could literally constitute to only having sex one time in your whole life (You get the person pregnant on the first go, which is common. And then decide you only want to have 1 kid).

In 1 Corinthians this verse clearly permits married couples to have sex at will with each other:

“The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.”

I take this to mean you can’t neglect your spouse’s needs. You can have relations within your marriage as much as you want to, but both parties have to remain open to whatever comes from those relations. There are times in a woman’s cycle where she is more fertile, if you aren’t hoping to conceive, avoid having sex during those times and both husband and wife should concentrate their efforts during those times to pray and grow closer together, as well as to God.
