Yesterday I went to Mass for the first time in 10 years. I thought I’d share my experience with you.
The Church I attended was very traditional with a high altar, loads of statues and paintings, stations of the cross, an altar rail, plenty of stained glass windows etc. It truly was a sight to behold.
I decided to attend a Missa Cantata, or sung Latin Mass and I wasn’t disapointed. It was amazing. I’ve never been to a Latin Mass before and the sense of sacredness and reverence was overwhelming. Although I didn’t understand most of the service, it didn’t matter because I spent the time meditating on the Passion and on the sacrifice taking place at the altar. I also prayed for myself and for my family. Rather than feeling bored, I felt a deep connection with God that I never experienced as a child during a Novus Ordo Missae.
The Church was far from full and the parishioners were all older people, ranging from the 40’s to the 80’s. I would estimate that there were about 60 people present for the Mass. I’m 20 years old, so I stood out like a sore thumb. When I first entered the Church, the older parishioners looked suprised to see me there. One of the Priest’s assistants, who is about 70, expressed shock that I wanted to go to the Latin Mass instead of the Novus Ordo; however, they all welcomed me and seemed pleased that I attended.
I met the Priest and he is a nice man. He wore an old fashioned cassock and a biretta hat. He asked me a few questions and offered to hear my confession but I told him I’d rather wait so that I could make a proper examination of conscience. He looked suprised when I said this. Did I do the right thing or should I have took him up on his offer?
I think I’m going to attend again next week. Also, most of the people spent the time reading through their missal. They didn’t appear to be watching the Mass. I think I’m going to try and memorise the missal so that I can spend time at Mass praying and watching. Has anyone else done this?
This is definitely the Mass for me. I hope in the future that there will be more younger people like myself so that we preserve this for the future.
I would like to thank everyone on this forum who has helped me on my journey back into the Church.
