Getting another opinion from the Diocese or a priest seems good advice. If I were in your situation and took all this contradictory advice seriously, I would go bananas.
Umm yeah… To my knowledge, marriage is the only other valid sacrament other than baptism that the Protestants have. It’s because the ministers is the couple themselves. The priest is just an official witness. However, those in the Church are required to marry with the blessing of the Church… for security reasons (I think).
I was told a civil marriage is NOT a marriage. PERIOD. A Jewish marriage would be recognized because it was a “religious” ceremony between two Jewish people. My priest told me my marriage was not even considered a marriage. I think he’s been steered wrong.
You’re priest has, or you misunderstood him. A civil marriage for two non-Catholics can be valid, and it can even be sacramental, according to the CCs teaching.
