A Union rep at my wife’s work ( She works for the State of CA ) was telling ppl to vote no on Prop 73. What gives them the right to do that?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

That Prop has no bearing on anything Union!!!

Sure it was not Prop 75(PUBLIC EMPLOYEE UNION DUES. RESTRICTIONS ON POLITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS. EMPLOYEE CONSENT REQUIREMENT. INITIATIVE STATUTE)?

Postitive… they talked about that Prop too of course… but they also talked about the Props.

Jeffrey, what is happening in California? I thought that Arnold was very popular and now all this stuff comes out.One thing I have to say is that Californians seem truly involved and willing to make the efforts necessary to get their points across. My sister was a poll judge for years and during the off years every voter counted for thirty voters who failed to vote.
I’m especially annoyed and confounded by Black folks and women who fail to vote, after all their ancestors went thru to get
them the vote.

Well, I suppose that Union rep is happy today since neither 73 nor any other initative passed. 😦

I dunno… too liberal IMO. As for Arnold… the Unions put alot of money out there is the only thing I can think of. Actually more than 50% of California is red… its just that the counties with the most population are blue.

The politics of California also make my wife and myself reallllly want to move.

Prop 73 isn’t even a parental consent law it’s just a parental notification. It basically said that the doctor has to inform the parents that an abortion will be performed 48 hours before. Unfortunately it didn’t pass 😦 The only semi good news is that it lost by a very small margin. I think less than 1%. Maybe someday!

California voted the way it has always voted. When it comes to propositions, this state is neither red or blue. The people have voted for their pocket books again. Or, at least, what they think will let them retain more money. That’s the way it always goes in this stupid state. We’ve always voted down good legislation in favor of not paying more for living the way we do. We’ve always voted for bad legislation in favor of the promise to make more money, or retain our money. The people of Ca. have not realized yet that they drive inflation just as much as anyone else does here.

Pardon my ignorance, but does this differ significantly from unions being courted by and endorsing political candidates?

Neither Californian nor union nor even currently employed

Jeffrey, unions have nothing to do with WORKERS. They are huge, liberal political machines that serve THE UNION itself and their high-level employees.

If the unions do nothing for the workers, where do you think pensions and the forty-hour work week came from? Yes there have been bad union bosses and bad unions, but they are largely responsable for the standard of living we enjoy today. I was a union member for thirty-five years, and other than grumbling about the dues a little, I was glad we had a little protection for our jobs. We are seeing the effect of the weaker unions in lower wages, and the mass exodus of jobs overseas.

\

But what do they do currently?

Look out for themselves!

How many legitimate jobs have been created by labor unions?

How much investment do they make in American industry?

How many jobs have they forced offshore?

What have they done to GM and Ford (along with mismanagement)?

Have you ever compared wages between plants in a company which operates both union and non-union factories? I have and the results would surprise you.

In my opinion, most, not all, unions have outlived their usefulness.

The things that made unions necessary are now protected by law-- wage and hour laws, OSHA regulations etc. Unions AS THEY EXIST TODAY do not serve workers, they serve themselves.

If what you say is true, the american worker is really caught between a rock and a hard place. The corporations after record profits, no matter what, and the unions fighting dwindling membership because of oursourcing of jobs to Mexico and China. If you go to any store, you will be hard pressed to find anything made in this country. But don’t blame it all on unions trying to get a living wage for its members. Many companies, while making good profits here, wanted more and more. I think that is called greed, and I believe you will find it on both sides of the table. Examples in my area. Huffy bicycles, to China. Rubbermaid, to Mexico, Ingersal-Rand, to Mexico, and the list goes on and on. We are in real trouble.

I wonder if the people who are voting against parental notification of abortions think to themselves “Heck, I don’t want to know if my kids have abortions!” If not, then what on earth ARE they thinking? What parent would not want to know that their child had a surgical procedure? You would think that even if they are pro-abortion, they would want to know what’s going on in their own child’s life for “selfish” reasons.

I don’t know the first thing about Unions, but if they started telling members to vote a certain way, why don’t the members just say “No, I’m voting FOR it, and this is why I think EVERYONE should vote for it…”

At the risk of [post=1091101]repeating myself[/post]:
