Can anyone recommend a godd Missal for me please? I’ve looked at some on amazon but they seem to have latin and english

Idealy I’d like a missal that covers all the masses - daily and sunday - with some other prayers and maybe some commentary on the readings - that kinda thing.

As always - you have my gratitude.

Are you looking for the Ordinary Form of the Mass, or the Extraordinary Form of the Mass? Since you seem surprised by the Latin, it sounds like you’re interested in the Ordinary Form. The best Ordinary Form missal is the Daily Roman Missal by James Socias. It’s available in leather or hardbound, and regular or large print editions. It has all of the readings for the three year cycle of Masses, and even contains the rarely used Latin translations. It has pages and pages of explanations and prayers. Here’s a link (This is just one of the versions. There are several, as I stated above):

The St. Joseph’s Missal is also a perennial favorite, but I don’t think it’s as good as the Daily Roman Missal.

Now, you should know that a new translation of the Mass is in the middle of being approved right now, so all of the wordings will change sometime in 2010 or 2011. In other words, now might not be the best time to buy an expensive missal. If you’d like a very good alternative, you could try Magnificat magazine. They send you all of the readings each month in a paperback missal, along with daily stories about saints, the liturgy of the hours prayers, and many other fascinating spiritual resources. It will always be up to date, and it’s a nice product. Here’s the link:

If you’re looking for a missal for the EXTRAORDINARY Form, then I would go with either the one published by Baronius Press or Angelus Press. They’re very very similar, and they seem to ALWAYS be the two that people recommend. They are both of very high quality.

Thank you Rolltide 👍 If it’s all going to change soon, I might wait. Ive checked out the Magnificat - somehow seems fitting as this was the first prayer I came across that started my conversion 🙂

I agree that if you go to the Ordinary Form of the mass (the one said mostly in English) the monthly booklet Magnificat might suit your needs. It’s easy to put in a pocket or purse and has daily reflections.

The Magnificat is the best route to go, at least for now. Not only does it have the readings and prayers of the Mass for every day of the month, it also has Morning and Evening prayer selections, as well as brief catechetical meditations from great spirituals writers such as St. Augustine, St. Teresa of Avila, Pope Benedict XVI, and others. It also has some really good doctrinal items and a selection of hymns that is actually quite good.

I do own the Daily Roman Missal that was recommended in post #2. I have found it quite helpful because not only does it have all of the readings and propers for the entire liturgical year, it also has the propers for Votive Masses, Feast Days and Solemnities. It also has the texts of the prayers in English and Latin, as well as prayers for the sick, the dying and the dead. I gave my PV a Daily Roman Missal and he uses it for his Mass kit.
