I'm looking for new music. What's on your playlist?

My Spotify and iPod are chock full of all kinds of songs that please my ears, but all of it is secular stuff, mostly because I haven’t found Christian or Catholic artists that genuinely match my taste. P&W, as wholesome as it is, generally doesn’t excite me, maybe with the exception of like 2 Matt Maher songs. I’m the kind of fellow who enjoys lots of oldies like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Grand Funk Railroad, Jimi Hendrix (I LOOOOOOVE Jimi Hendrix), Stevie Ray Vaughn, bluesmen like John Lee hooker, and a slew of other stuff like that. I also enjoy jazz and funk groups like Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, Blues Brothers, Lettuce, Sly & The Family Stone, Miles Davis, and Dave Brubeck.

As good as all of this stuff is to me, however, I do think that I need to get some christian tunes pumping into my ears. It’s nice to hear songs that talk about things that are, well, genuinely nice. So, I wanted to ask you guys, what are your music suggestions for a rock-head like me? Got any names I may have overlooked?

I just learned this week about a band called the Deep Dark Woods. They’re from Saskatoon, and have a vibe very similar to the Band. Lots of videos on youtube. There’s a good one of them playing live at KEXP.
I’ve also been enjoying the new album from Nathan Salsburg and James Elkington, instrumental duets on acoustic guitar.
And, seasonally, Advent at Ephesus from the Benedectines of Mary Queen of Apostles.
 
Also, not new, but r.e. jazz, have you checked out Landmarks from the Brian Blade Fellowship? It’s a very interesting and, to my ears, atypical jazz album. Though the players are all world class, it’s more about mood and composition than about “hey, I’m playing a million notes per bar on the tenor sax.” Especially great drumming from Brian Blade and piano from Jon Cowherd. There’s a really good video on youtube of the band playing live at the Chicago Music Exchange.

And one more, definitely not new, but have you ever heard the Wrecking Ball album from Emmylou Harris? It’s one of my favorite albums of all time. Totally different from every album of hers that came before (and I like those, too), and there is spiritual content. If I only owned five albums (and I used to own a record store for many years), that would be one of them.
 
Have you tried The Waterboys? Their song “December” is awesome and a fantastic song that in the last stanza invokes the wonder of the Incarnation. “Strange Boat” is based on some lines from C.S./ Leiws.

“The Cave” by Mumford and Sons is about St. Francis, specifically G.K. Chesterton’s book about him.

Johnny Cash, of course. His song “Redemption” from his later period is wonderful, as is “I Came to Believe.”

For some gospel, anything by the Staple Singers, esp. “God’s Wonderful Love” and “Who Take the Mary Out of Christmas?” or “Glitter and Gold” by Rebecca Ferguson. Mavis Staples’ cover of Bob Dylan’s “Gotta Serve Somebody”, or “In Christ There is No East or West.”

“Jesus” by the Velvet Underground

“True Love Will Find You in the End” by the “outsider” artist Daniel Johnson, or his “Lord Give Me Hope.”

“Never Ending Happening” by Bill Fay

Sufjian Stevens

“When Love Comes to Town” by U2 and B.B. King. B.B.'s final lyrics about the Crucifixion bat this song out of the park.

“Live Forever”. Love this song by Billy Joe Shaver

The “I Chase the Devil (Ironshirt)” cover by Madness calls out Satan.

“Don Quixote” by Gordon Lightfoot

“LIfe Away From the Garden” by Damien Jurado, an artist I’ve always liked, even moreso now that his works have become more explicitly Christian in theme.

“The Deer’s Cry” by Malachi Cush - awesome musical version of the Breastplate Prayer of St. Patrick. Wonderful song to start your morning with.

“Salvation” by Robert Thomas - a Motown song that was one of the “Northern Soul” songs in the UK.

“Rabid Bits of Time” by Chad VanGaalen.

YES - Daniel Johnston is one of the great unknown American singer-songwriters. For anyone wondering if it’s ok for Catholics to listen to Daniel Johnston: he once turned down a huge major label record deal (one of the most unprecedented at the time) because Metallica were also on that same label. The guy’s a genius and an inspiration for anyone living with a mental illness. I really hope he gets nominated for the RRHOF (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) soon.

Well, for me its my kids. I introduce them to older stuff, I hear what they’re listening to as well. Funny in that my daughter got into vinyl and listened to some of my old albums and loved one of the groups my Dad loved when he heard me playing it. Supertramp’s Breakfast in America’ he actually grabbed it from me for a long time (I grabbed his Artie Shaw album…)

Also, youtube- I got into ‘Epic’ music by searching for the scores for some movie music I liked. Also, youtube is fantastic at digging up performances by many of the greats in music- Johnnie Lee Hooker, Sonny Boy Williamson, Etta James etc. etc.

Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Mountain Goats, Motorhead, Darkthrone, and Melvins.
