Hello everyone. I first would like to thank all of you for taking the time to read this thread, my words and perhaps lend some thoughts. I posted a bit more about myself under the meet and greet thread.
However, to make a long story short, I live on the apartment community filled with low and very low income families. I came to realize that the kids here are spiritually lost, even though their parents are god fearing. But i can see the difference when they claim to have faith and a belief in god to me with what i see they have not taught their kids about faith and god. In otherwords, they allude to the world they believe in god, but don’t read the bible, practice compassion and generosity or go the church. Further, they don’t sit as a family to read the bible and or learn together what it means “really means” to be a family with faith and kindness.
Recently, i have given some of the kids bibles that FreeBibles organization graciously mailed to me. I notice some of the kids (around 7 - 10 years old) were elated to get a bible and eager to read it. While many others (around 14 and older) wanted nothing to do with it.
As for the kids that took a kids bible, they say they are reading them almost daily. Before handing the bible over to them i made a big deal about the book. Perhaps, i was a bit over dramatic. But i think they understand how important it is to have a bible of their own.
A couple of days later some were so happy that they came back to ask if there was any errands or chores they could do for me.what they say they are and what they actually do are two different things.
This morning a few of the kids had nothing to do outside (and no sunday school to go to since their parents don’t practice their religion) and i told them the story about Noah and the Ark. They had never heard the story and my version was a bit annotated and shortened - to say the least.
What i believe the best tool for me to use is time and patience. I will take a few minutes here and there to help these kids with understanding the world and how they can make it better through faith and goodness.
If anyone has any experience or ideas about how best to proceed with my mission, i hope your thoughts can be shared here.
I have been pondering about downloading religious movies (like noahs ark) onto dvd and give them to the kids to watch. However, i am having a hard time finding simplified versions of these stories that will keep the kids attention “and” teach them something in the process. I hope someone can offer ideas on this.
Also, i would like to find some crucifix’s and religious medals for these kids. I hope i can find them for free. But if not, then i am willing to buy them hopefully being on the inexpensive side. Most of my finances goes to helping the poor pets around here. Most kids don’t know what it means to be compassionate to animals. But those that have seen me, are learning. Also, i should mention that a couple of them help me do a little gardening the other day. Again, they had absolutely no idea on gardening and were enthusiastic to learn. (I really wonder what their parents are teaching them - if anything…)
