My mom has copies of the original certificates she held from the day I was baptized and confirmed (they were on different dates but both during my first year on earth. I was destined to be Byzantine ) but I just spoke to her and said she should just keep them and get me new ones instead. Sentimental reasons I guess.

They always want a recent copy from the parish, with the parish seal, when asking for a copy (for confirmation, for marriage etc.). You may need both if they didn’t record your Confirmation on your baptismal record. (I thought that recording was universal, but again, the Church turns out to not be the greatest at record keeping sometimes ),

I got the copies for my daughter for “sentimental value” for her for a birthday one year when I realized we hadn’t been given them when she had her sacraments of initiation. I didn’t get anything either when I was received into the Church, different parish, different time. So I got a copy of mine at that time also. The priest in my Latin parish had asked all of us in his homily on the Baptism of our Lord who knows the date of your Baptism? Maybe half the church did. He reminded us it’s your birthday and you should know it and celebrate it. That was what prompted me to get my record and my daughter’s.

It was a fun job since they were being sent back to parishes all over the world. Really affirmed for me the sense of the Universal Church.

One year at the Latin Cathedral here I was responsible for mailing back the Baptismal records to where they came from along with the certificate of the Confirmation-- for Catholics who had never “completed their sacraments” after their Baptism, so had just gotten Confirmed as adults by the bishop in his annual Confirmation of the Catholics. It was a fun job since they were being sent back to parishes all over the world. Really affirmed for me the sense of the Universal Church.

I can see the next Dan Brown inspired movie with the Vatican having this huge database of baptismal records dating back all the way to the Apostles

On my declaration that I signed when my canonical transfer came through, they had the name of the wrong Latin Archbishop - they had the old one, a flaming lunatic liberal whose retirement mysteriously coincided with Pope Benedict’s elevation to the Papacy and a little audience the Archbishop had with him right after the elevation. But Bishop John (Kudrick) thinks I’m Byzantine - he congratulated me on my facebook page, so I must be! Facebook never lies!

It took a few months for the process to go through. One piece of advice I can give is to have your UGCC pastor send a letter to the tribunal endorsing you. I had to do this for my transfer, though of course it will be a different tribunal since I’m Ruthenian rather than Ukrainian. Tracking down my pastor (he had been moved, and Father Deacon appointed administrator of what was left of the tiny parish), and waiting for him to find time to write the letter, slowed down the process a little bit, so I would get started on that now.

I’m in direct contact with our bishop and he said he will help me with the process, so I’m confident here.

I will add this to my long, and growing, list of stories of how well the Catholic Church takes care of our paper work. LOL!

Not to be a stick in the mud or anything but it is still more than just a “formality” as you do not just need a “yes” from your receiving bishop but you also need a “yes” from the bishop you are leaving.

In the local RC diocese, that desk is staffed by a BC priest (and the RC bhshop is sympathetic and supportive to start with)
